Acronis OS Selector Activator did not work
Want to add a second operating system to PC that has Windows XP installed
- Installed Acronis Disk Dierector Suite 10 to internal hard drive
- Downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 to USB Flash drive
- Installed Ubuntu from Flash drive to unallocated space on the internal hard drive
- Rebooted system and Ubuntu loaded
- Inserted CD with Acronis Operating System Selctor Activator and rebooted
- Successfully loaded Acronis Operating System Sector Activator
- Selected Activate and clicked
- It said Can Not Activate
- Inserted Acronis Director Full version CD and rebooted
- Sucessfully loaded Disk Director Suite into memory
- Selected the parition where Ubunutu is installed and pressed Delete
- Selected the Ubuntu swap partition and pressed delete
- The partitions disappeared from the graph that shows disk partitions
- I tried to exit Acronis Disk Director Suite and was told two operations were pending
- I clicked continue
- A screen appeared that said Operation Progress
- I waited and waited no progress was ever shown
- Could not Cancell the operation
- Could not abort the operation
- To shut down the system I had to terminate the electrical power
What did I do wrong?
What do I need to do inorder to get the Acronis Operating System Selection menu installed?

MudCrab, thank you for your prompt reply to my post. You asked did I include both OSS programs om the CD? I made two bootale media, one with OSS reactivator, the other with the Full DD Suite of programs.
One thing I did not do, when I initially installed the Full DD Suite 2009, I did not activate OSS. Should I have?
One thing I do not understand is why I am unable to delete the partition with Ubuntu? I thought DD was in memory and I could use it to repartition the hard drive.

It's still not clear to me if you included both the OSS programs on the CD. Here is a sample menu that shows them:
You do not have to install or activate OSS when you install DD. OSS doesn't even have to be installed in Windows if you don't want to. It can be installed directly from the CD.
---
The problem with not being able to delete the partitions sounds like the Linux-based version of DD didn't work properly on the computer. Have you tried using the Safe Mode version?

I downloaded Disk Director Suite 10 - installed it - created two bootable CDs; one CD has Acronis Disk Director Full version on it, the other CD has Acronis, Operating System Selector Activator on it.
When I installed DD the PC was running under Windows XP. I have since installed Ubuntu and now the system boots under Ubuntu. When I boot the system I would like to load the Acronis Operating System Selector menu. It is my understanding that when I boot from either CD I should be able to actiivate the Acronis OSS. I do not understand why this doesn't work.

I have booted from a CD that has Acronics Disk Director Suite 10 Full Versions on it. I selected Manual operation. I see a diagram in the main window that shows how my hard drive is partitioned. I want to activate OSS menu but can't find a way to do that.
This PC booted under Windows XP. Then I downloaded Ubuntu to a USB Flash Drive. When I rebooted the install started. Now the PC boots under Ubuntu. Maybe I should get back to running Windows XP by deleteing the partition that has Ubuntu.
What do you think?

Hi Mudcrab,
When I boot from the CD with OS Selector Activator I am asked to Activate OS Selector, it welcomes me and I click Activate, then it says, Acronis OS Selector failed to activate.
When I boot from the CD that has DD Full verson I am given two choices, either I can select Acronics Disk Director Suite Full version or Windows OS. I am not shown Acronis OS Selector Setup or Acronis OS Selector Activator. When I select Windows, Ubuntu loads; forget that.
When I select Acronis Disk Director DD loads. The Toolbar has the following tabs: Disk, View, Operations, Wizards, Help. On the right side of the screen is a menu with four main categories: Wizards, Operations, Advanced, Details. I have looked at the detail of all of these options and I did not find a way to activate OS Selector.

As far as I know, when installing OSS from the CD it can only be done using the OSS Setup program (not the Activator or DD).
You may need to make a new CD and include both the programs. In the Media Builder picture below, the OSS programs are in the red boxes. I will usually select everything (the green box, in this case) so that I have DD (Full and Safe) and the OSS programs on one CD. If TI is also installed, I'll include it too.

I booted from the CD I made using DD, and it has DD Suite on it. I used the Explore function and found Bootable Rescue Media Builder.INK in the Windows Progams directory. I think the original install was made properly, and the CD for Activating OC was made OK. Something is preventing Aconics Operating System Sector Activator from working. I wonder what could be causing this to happen?

The Activator program can't work if OSS isn't installed and setup. The Activator and the Setup program are two separate programs. All the Activator can do is restore the OSS MBR and relink to the OSS booting files. It can't install or setup OSS.
Again, it's not clear to me if the Setup program is actually on either of your CDs. It's also not clear to me if OSS is even installed.

Hi MudCrab,
I performed a complete installation of Disk Director 10, including installation of Bootable Media Manager. However I did not reboot an install OS Selector by selecting Start - Programs - Acronics - AcronicsDiskDirector -Install Acronis OS Selector.
Now what should I do?
I can boot to either Disk Directoror or Ubuntu? If I boot to DD is there a way to get back to Windows XP?

I would use Media Builder to create another CD that includes ALL of the programs (DD Full, DD Safe, OSS Activator and OSS Setup). You should just need to check the Acronis Disk Director Suite checkbox to select them all.
You should be able to install OSS from Windows or from the CD (assuming the OSS Setup program is on it). If you're in Windows, try it from there.
Since you're going to be multi-booting, you may want to do a Custom install of OSS so you can select which partition holds the OSS files. It's best to use a non-OS partition.
---
If XP is still installed and you can't boot into it, you would need to get that fixed first.
Is the XP partition Primary and set as Active?
Do you have a standard Microsoft OEM or retail CD? If so, you can repair the MBR:
- Boot to the XP CD.
- Start the Recovery Console.
- Run the following command: fixmbr
- Exit the Recovery Console.
- Reboot. The computer should boot into XP.
NOTE: Fixing the MBR code will stop GRUB from booting.
---
Another option: If you have GRUB installed from your Ubuntu installation, add XP to that menu. It may already be there if XP was already installed when you installed Ubuntu. If it is, you should be able to get into XP from there.

Hi MudCrab,
I booted from XP CD; started Recovery Console, ran fixmbr; rebooted into XP; loaded DD
Selected Tools > Bootable Media Builder, checked all four items; made a bootable CD.
Custom installed OSS to D:/BootWiz.
Rebooted; Acronis Operting System Selector loaded with Windows in the main window.
Thank you, MudCrab.
