cannot duplicate winxp partition on acer notebook

Hello,
my problem is this: I have made a backup copy of the entire hdd using acronis true image 2009. Then I shrinked the OS partition by half and copied the OS (Windows XP) into the empty space. Now I should be able to select one of the two in the bootmenu of Acronis "OS Selector". However there is still just one entry (of my first partition) and I tried everything to get the second partition also recognied. But it didn't work.
Can anyone help me?
btw: my real intention is to get Win7 and WinXP working on the same harddrive. My Acer laptop came with what they call "Dualboot" functionality. However what they mean by that is that I can chose between XP and Windows7 for the insallation. If I want to switch to the other OS, the harddrive is earased first. I thought DD would do the job, so I spent several days on it now but I am not any further. That laptop allows me just ONE system :-( Can anyone help?
