Cannot move a partition wthin a disk

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I don't see a solution in http://forum.acronis.com/search/apachesolr_search/move%20partition%20di…

So I want to tell my problem here.

My HW and SW equipment is:
Notebook Siemens Amilo M1420
Windows XP Home SP3
Acronis True Image Version 8.0 (build 937) --- now written ATI
Acronis Disk Director Suite Version 10.0 (build 2.161) --- now written ADDS

I had a heavy Windows crash (computer shutting down itself during XP3-update from KBxx to KByy).
I had no chance to recover Windows with the XP internal system recovery tool.
So I tried it with ATI.
With the xp3.tib on an external USB-disk I could not recover my partition "C" (containing Windows). ATI said "xp3.tib is damaged".
But I had luck with xp2.tib on the same USB-disk: I could recover Windows XP SP2.

Problem:
I want to upgrade to XP SP3 using the xp3.tip placed on the external USB-disk.
The Acronis user forum says: to avoid the message according to a damaged .tib, move the .tib from the external USB-disk to the internal disk.
So I used the ADDS to get free place on the internal disk for the xp3.tib --- free place will be partition "Y".
Imagine the ADDS bar graph representation of a disk:
on the right end of my internal disk I have located partition "C" (50% of 38 GB used) --- this partion I cannot resize (make it some MB smaller) with ADDS.
So I moved some partitions of the internal disk to the left to get 16 GB space for partition "Y", lefthand of partition "C".
At least I have got 15,5 GB space for the partition "Y", which I want to use for internal placing of the xp3.tib, hoping, ATI will see it as an internal .tib not being damaged.
To get the minimum of 16 MB for "Y" with ADDS, I must move the partition "P" (size: 4,9 GB) to the left into a free place of 6 MB, on the same internal disk.
But this is not possible. The ADDS looks like doing it, at least showing some messages (no errors) on the "light blue screen" when restarting Windows XP.
If I start ADDS again to see the result: the partition "P" I wanted to move, ist at the same place as before, and I cannt get 16 GB for partition "Y".

The partition "P" which cannot be moved, contains programs / applications. The ATI and the ADDS are on it, too. Is this the reason that it cannot be moved ?

What can I do to move the "P" ?
Thx in advance for your hints.

Regards,
Josef

Josef,

1. Using ATI 8 (which build are you using?) see if you can explore the xp3.tib or mount it. In ATI 8 mounting I think is named Attaching. If that doesn't work, see if you can validate the image, there is always the chance the image really is damaged especially if the drive was attached when you had the PC failure.

2. Give your C and Y partition proper labels - for example give the Y partition the label 'image' or whatever you like.

3. Make a rescue CD that contains both DD10 and ATI 8.

4. Try making the partition moves running from the rescue CD. Partitions will not have the same letters as in Windows, which is why it is a good idea for the partitions to have names as these will be the same in Linux as they are in Windows.

Could you post a screen shot of what DD10 is showing you?
