Can't install VISTA on second hard disk

I have 2 500gb hard disks. Both have a primary partition. Windows XP pro is the OS I'm currently using. I want to install VISTA on the second hard disk.

I put the VISTA installation disk in the CD and reboot; DD's front page opens but -- contrary to the instructions in Chapter 8 -- there's no "CD item' when I click on 'OS' menu.

Please give me step-by-step instructions on how to get VISTA OS installed on the second hard disk.

John,

I assume OSS is already installed and working okay with XP. If the Vista DVD drive doesn't show up in the OSS menu, Vista will have to be installed from outside OSS. In my opinion, this is a better method anyway.

If your goal is to have Vista installed completely to the second hard drive so that it doesn't take over the booting of XP, you'll need to do the following:

  1. Enter the BIOS and make the second hard drive the booting drive (personally, I would also disconnect the first drive so there's no chance of Vista linking to it).
  2. Boot to the Vista DVD and install Vista to the drive.
  3. Once Vista is installed, enter the BIOS and reset the first drive back as the booting drive (if you disconnected the drive, reconnect it before doing this).
  4. Boot to the first drive. The OSS menu should come up. Hopefully, it will detect Vista on the second drive. Do not boot into Vista at this time.
  5. Edit the properties of the Vista menu entry and make sure that the Disk Order option is disabled (uncheck the Disks >> Specify boot order manually option). This feature doesn't work properly with Vista or Windows 7.
  6. Save the changes (if any) to the Vista entry's properties.
  7. Boot into Vista.

Please note that OSS does not always properly boot Vista or Windows 7 when they're on the non-booting drive. If possible, I recommend installing to the booting drive instead.
