Change Datenträger Basis zu Wechselmedium

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I formatted an USB stick with the hp USB Formatter HPUSBFW_v2.2.3.exe in order to make the stick bootable with FAT32. Of course, this works fine. But: how to change the stick back - not to behave as a disk (Basis Datenträger) but as a removable device (Wechselmedium).

Is Acronis Disk Director V.10 the right tool? And if: who to ... (I didn't found any hint in e.g. the Disk Editor Tool).

HHR:

The HP USB formatter should not be capable of modifying the Removable Device bit on the USB stick. It only writes a standard MBR and partition table to the first sector on the stick.

If you want to return to the way the USB stick was formatted previously you could use Disk Director to wipe (write zeros to) the first few sectors, then insert the USB stick into a Windows PC and format it. I believe it will then show up as a removable device.

To do this with Disk Director, right-click on the disk and choose "Clear". On the next dialog, choose "Delete partitions and destroy data". Proceed with the clear operation. You can cancel the operation after a few seconds; you do not have to wait for it to zero the entire USB stick (unless you want to).

Before doing this, copy any needed files from the USB stick because all data on the USB stick will be lost.

Hi Marc, thanks for your reply, but:

sorry to say, it doesn't work as described. Deleting partition and destroying data in Disk Director leaves the type of drive as it is - see pdf attached - page 1 as "unzugeordnet" / unassigned. You may see two other flash drives lettered I and H as drive type "Wechselmedium" on page 2, even here the unformatted and unassigned "Datenträger 3" has the drive type "Basis".

This status doesn't change to Removable if you format the drive, see page 3.

I see.
There is a tool to change the removable bit on a USB flash drive. Some discussion of the tool is on the 911CD forum here: http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=21572

Edit** The tool is here: http://www.pendriveapps.com/lexar-usb-flip-the-removable-media-bit-tool/

It's ironic - most users want to change the status of their USB flash drive from Removable to Fixed. You want to do the opposite. Hopefully the Lexar tool will work on your USB flash drive.

hi marc,

it looks like the flip-tool does flip only from removable to fix media. Nevertheless, save youre time, it's not really worth. For your info: the reason for me to set back the status is to use a performance check tool for usb sticks eg. FlashMemoryToolkit, but this tool lists / reads removable media only - may be you know a better one like HDTune for HDDs.

Thanks for your support.
