convert dynamic simple volume to basic Windows 7 x64

Thread needs solution

I have a hardware RAID6 array that is currently a large (18TB) single dynamic volume. Note this is not Windows RAID, but a hardware RAID card. To windows it is a single large drive. I had to make this volume dynamic to convert from the default cluster size of 4096 bytes to 8192 bytes (shrink, expand volumes and shuffle data) to break the 16 TB barrier.

My question is: Can DD convert from a single, simple dynamic volume on a single "drive" to a basic volume without losing data? Can it do so from within Windows 7, not requiring booting from the Acronis CD as I am 90% sure this would fail without the proper RAID drivers.

Has anybody successfully converted from dynamic to basic without data loss? I see no benefit imposing an additional layer of virtualization between Windows and my RAID array and would like to switch back to a basic volume like I used to have.

Thanks,
