Copy boot volume with restarting

Thread needs solution

Before using Acronis I used Norton Ghost
I could backup the current boot volume (using VSS) to a spare partition in a single online operation (no restart required)

Now I have both Acronis TI and DD but neither seems to be capable of this simple job

With DD I am forced to restart (and manually remove the target volume)

With TI I need to find enough spare space for the intermediate image file (and perform two separate operations: backup and then restore)

Am I missing a trick?

Otherwise what is best way to get this missing feature added asap?

Doesn't everybody keep bootable backup partitions handy?
This allows me to boot to a previous snapshot of the OS by restarting ... no recovery media required

I don't think you're missing anything. A reboot is required. You could add it to the wish list thread if you want.

I'm sure some people do keep bootable backup partitions handy. However, most of what I've seen in that area is a cloned drive as a backup (this requires a reboot too).
