Corrupt files after partition resize and chkdsk operation

Thread needs solution

Hi All. I have just used DD 2011 to down resize my D:(Data) partition on a Vista Home Premuim OS laptop and move the free space to the C: primary partiiton. The operation appeared to complete successfully however on the reboot, Windows automatically ran ChkDsk, reported errors on the D: partition/drive and commenced fixing them. The 'fix' took several minutes and seemed to be performing the same operation on multiple files on the partition. The boot up then completed successfully.

When we checked the data on the downsized D: drive a large number of image files (jpg) were damaged or corrupt - according to several programmes used to try and open them. Non of the damaged files are displaying a thumbnail image. We have tried several JPEG repair/recovery tools but they all report that important file information is missing and/or the file is corrupt.

Other types of data files appear to be OK (.doc, .pdf, etc) but we haven't tried to open every file. Also there are some JPG files that still open OK. These good files correctly display a thumbnail image.

The majority (but not all) of the 'damaged' JPG files are in sub folders of one folder on the drive.

I read on a data recovery forum that chkdsk doesn't change data files themselves but only changes the file tables, etc. I don't know if this is correct but if it is, the problem would seem to have been caused by the DD operation and not the subsequent chkdsk operation.

Can you 'wind back' the DD resize operation. Does DD create a log file of what was done that could shed light on the problem? Any other thoughts or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Many Thanks - Simon

You can't undo the changes unless you have a backup image you can restore. This is why it's recommended to create one before making partitioning changes.

The problem may have been caused by something DD did. It might also have been caused by an existing problem. Do you know if there were any file system errors on the partition before you did the resize?

Hi All. I have a similar problem. My c:/ drive is almost full, within 1GB of full. C:/ is for the OS and program files running on Win XP; D:/ is for data; and F:/ is for pagefile. I used DD 2011 to resize my D:(Data) partition from 120GB down to 65GB with the intent of expanding C:/.

The operation appeared to complete successfully []I didn't check the log yet.] On the reboot, Windows automatically ran ChkDsk, reported errors on the D: partition/drive and commenced fixing them. The 'fix' took several minutes and seemed to be performing the same operation on multiple files on the partition. The computer rebooted itself several times and eventually stabilised and everything looked like iot worked. Windows Explorer showed my new D: as only 65GB.

Then I launched DD again and it showed errors in D:, still showed its size as 120GB.

What to do?

You could try doing a slight resize (larger/smaller) on the partition and see if that sets it right (assuming DD will allow it). Other options include using a different partitioning program or copying the data off, deleting the partition, recreating it, and then copying the files back.

Hopefully, you have a backup of the data if it's important.
