Creating Active Partition

Thread needs solution

I am running Win 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Gateway DX Intel Core i7 2600 Computer (DX4850-45C).
I would like to create a new active partition to run Win 98SE.
Is this possible, and how can I do it?
Thank you.

The partitioning layout may require some changes since you would probably need to place the Windows 98 partition at the beginning of the drive. This would require moving or resizing the first one or two partitions, depending on what they are.

You would need a Primary partition. Controlling the Active flag would need to be done manually (using DD, for example) or with a boot manager.

Before you try putting Windows 98 on a new computer, do some research. Make sure you can get the drivers you need. Most new computers (and quite a few older ones now) do not run the older versions of Windows easily. Installing can be difficult or impossible since it may require forcing compatibility mode and/or non-optimal BIOS settings. There may also be problems with drive corruption or access, especially with today's larger drives.

I would strongly consider running Windows 98 in a VM instead.

I am sorry, but I am somewhat illeterate with respect to computers.
Could you please explain how to run Windows 98 in a VM ? What is VM ?
Thank you.

VM = Virtual Machine

VM software lets you create a virtual machine and run an operating system on it. As an example, Windows 7 x64 would be the Host operating system (OS). You would install the VM software, create the VM, and then install Windows 98 into the VM as the Guest OS. Note that the Host computer needs to have enough resources (RAM, disk space, etc.) to actually run the Host OS and the Guest OS at the same time. If enough resources are available, multiple Guests can be run at the same time.

If the Guest OS needs direct access to hardware this may not work for you. Also, games usually don't do well in a VM.

Windows Virtual PC is available from Microsoft for free (you would need to download the version without XP Mode). A lot of people prefer VirtualBox or VMware VMware Player due to the fact that they have much better hardware support and more features. I currently use VMware Workstation 7 with occasional use of WVPC.
