DD 10 suite creation of system reserved areas
On disk 1 I have a FAT16 'Local Volume' (size 70 MB), Local Volume (C) (size 123,9 GB, Free space 43,00GB) and Dataparti (G) (size 341,8; free space 160,4GB). C is the system volume, G is a logical volume on the same disk. I tried to move some free space form the G volume to the C volume but the process stopped because of an error. No error message but the system just froze. After reboot I was asked if I wanted to roll back the re-allocation which I did. To my pleasant surprise the roll back process went smoothly: all (?) files were recovered.
DD10 (and DD11) reports the envisaged size of volumes C and G (i.e. as if no roll back had taken place). Windows Explorer reports the same size of C and G but a different free space:
dd10 C: free space 43GB G: free space 160,4GB
Windows Explorer C: free space 17GB G: free space 63,6GB
Norton Partition Magic reports a system reserved space in volume C (approx. 26GB in size) and a system reserved space in volume G (approx. 97GB in size).
I have no clue at all whether these system reserved spaces contain any info (probably not).
How do 'un-reserve' these system-reserved spaces? defragging does not help and do not move these spaces to the end of the volume so effectively these spaces are 'lost'.
I'm running XP/SP3; RAM is 4 GB; ample disk-space available (many GB's).
