DD does not see external hard disk

Thread needs solution

When an external hard disk wit a lot of data (Lacie 250 g) is added to the system (with Vista) Windows detects it but says: disk has to be formatted.
When starting Disk Director it sees the internal HDs but not the external HD.
I hope to restore the data from the external HD but it seems impossible to reach it without destroying the data.
Can someone help?

What build of DD are you using?

If you connect the Lacie to another computer, does the drive show up properly?

When was the last time you had the Lacie connected to this computer?

Have you tried using a different USB port? Try the rear computer ports if you've only tried the front ones or are connecting via a USB hub.

I wouldn't make any changes to the drive until you figure out if it's a problem with the drive or the computer/connection.

Hello MudCrab,

I use DD 10.0
I have connected the disk to another computer with XP (yesterday 4/11) and the day before I have written data to it (on the XP machine).
Also I tried different USP ports: no joy!

This could be a hardware problem:
try a different USB cable and or a different power supply for the external disk.
You migh try booting the computer WITH the USB external drive connected.
There is also the possibility the USB part of the external disk box has failed and you may as a last resort need to move the drive in the external case to another case or plug the bare drive into a USB dock or Sata port.

The disk drive testing software may be limited on what it can do via USB ports so if you have to recover the data and you have no luck with DD or Windows disk mamager you will need to direct connect to a disk controller. This will depend on the type of disk in the box.

If it is SATA is will be easy.

Hello Bram,

What is the current state of the issue? Were you able to get the access to the external hard drive? We can check the partition structure of the hard drives. If you need a further assistance, could you please download Acronis Report utility, create a report and attach to your post. Please don't forget to attach the external hard drive to the system.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you.

I am a newbie to Acronis products. I have an issue with formatting a hard drive.
I purchased a 1TB hard drive to clone my OS drive to. Acronis does not see the hard drive. It was formatted with windows 7. Is this problem due to a mismatch of formatting types. What can I do to make this work?

Hi Melody,

thank you for your posting!

Do you use the product in Windows or from bootable media?

Thank you.

Installed full version of DD12 which is the current version. SSD is identified, a WDigital is identified and only 1 of 3 Seagate expansion drives. What is the solution to DD12 identifying all data drives. OS is Win8.1 64bit. I would think this is pretty basic for the Acronis software to accomplish .... ?????. Also the system information module fails. Asus Z87Pro, i5 4670 @ stock speed, 16GB memory. All drives are reported correctly in Win8.1.

What's the deal?

Log file says "can not process disk 4 or disk 5 because sector size not supported (4096 bytes) HUH? These are both Seagate USB 3.0 4gig and 5gig drives.
How about some Acronis tech support on this? Thanks

Hello Douglas,

please take a look at the following article:

Acronis Disk Director: Operation Errors Out with "Cannot process 'Disk #' because its sector size is unsupported"

If you get a similar message, you'll find an explanation in this article.

And if you have other difficulties, please don't hesitate to contact our support.

Thank you.

I have Acronis DD 11 and using windows 7 Home Premium SP1 and I want to clone this this OS however, the external drive is not recognized for this procedure. All ports and cable are good. I just backed up this primary drive earlier today. Is there a step I am missing or procedure? Acronis seems straight-forward for this process. Any ideas?
