DD not working on Vista Home Premium

Thread needs solution

I purchased Acronis Disk Director 10.0 about a year ago and have now installed it on a new laptop running Vista Home Premium. I used it several months ago to split my HDD into partitions - all went OK. I now need to change the size of a partition and so tried grabbing some space from an adjacent partition - the process seemed to go OK and went through all the usual motions when I rebooted. However no changes were made!

So I decided to login to my acronis account and download the program again - did so, noted that I should just overwrite the existing installation and everything should work OK. Having done so (and rebotted) I attempted to resize a partition, to be informed that this was now a demo version of the damned software! I cannot see any option in the menu to enter the serial number (how dumb is THAT?) and now am stuck.

Any ideas folks?  Acronus support seems remarkably shy about making it easy to log a support ticket!

Thanks

Adrian

The full version of DD (the one that can be downloaded from your Acronis account) should ask for the serial number when you install it. Unless you had a really old build, the one you downloaded was probably the same. You may need to uninstall and reinstall.

When doing partitioning procedures from Windows that require a reboot to finish, it's recommended to abort and instead boot to the DD CD to make the changes. This gives you more control over the process and also allows you to see any errors. If the Full Mode version (Linux-based) doesn't work properly, you can download the updated ISO file from your account and create a new CD with that. You can also try the Safe Mode (DOS-based) version.

It's important to make sure that DD can see all the drives properly when you boot to the DD CD. It's also strongly recommended to have a current backup image of the drive prior to making any partitioning changes.

Your advice greatly appreciated MudCrab. I will do as you suggest.

What a pity Acronis don't supply software that just works as advertised, without the need for "ifs and buts and which way is the wind blowing today"!

Well, the nightmare continues! Mindful of your advice to take an image file before attempting to resize a partition - I did just that ... and doubtful about any damned thing that acronis provide, I decided I would try and restore that image before resizing. No luck (of course). When attempting to restore from within Windows, upon rebooting Acronis does start to load - then there is an error message, something like "PCI bridge error on sector xxx". The system then boots up into windows as usual.

The boot CD I burned doesn't work, it's just ignored. I have scoured my Acronis online account for a link to an ISO file - needless to say there isn't one!

So a perfect score of zero for BOTH acronis products ... and no obvious method of telling them what I think of their crap software, unless I care to pay for the privilege. Words fail me - I am red with rage at these assholes!!!

Sorry to rant at YOU, you've been very supportive.

Adrian,

For the CD version, have you tried the quiet acpi=off noapic option detailed in Section II of the Read Before You Post thread?

It may help if you posted your computer's specifications. Someone may have something similar.

When trying to boot the CD, is the CD drive listed before the hard drive in the BIOS boot order list? If the computer supports a BIOS Boot Menu, have you tried that? It's possible the CD drive is getting skipped and the computer is booting directly to the hard drive.

What version and build of TI do you have? The downloadable ISO files are not available for all of them (they should be, though).

Thanks for that quiet acpi=off noapic tip - but when I try to boot from the CD I get no selection screen advising me to select either "Full", "Safe" or "Boot into Windows" options.

My laptop is a relativelty new Acer Aspire 8930 with 3Gb RAM, twin 320Gb HDD, Intel P8600 2.4Ghz, dual core processor running Vista Home Premium SP1.

I did change the boot order of the drives, so it looks to the DVD drive before the HDD.

My version of TI is True Image 2009 Home Upgrade from TI Home 10. There is no sign of any link for an ISO file in my account. Just hopeless.

I have just uninstalled both products and will re-install and see if that makesw any difference!

AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH - what a load of crap! I am unable to complete installation of TI 2009 because at the very end of the install I get an error message "setup cannot copy the file timntr_2k.sys". I have found that file in 2 locations on my local C: drive - but the installer isn't happy with either. What a bag of crap - as ever.

I am going to look for alternative products - before I NEED to recover from a problem.
