DD12 Build 3219 WinPE 5.0 fails to start

Thread needs solution

Acronis, I wonder how you consider your customers. Beta testers, perhaps?

On a fresh installed machine, I installed ADK 5.0, then Disk Director 12 build 3219. Then I let Media Builder build a WinPE 32 bits ISO with no driver added. Then I burnt the ISO.

Upon restart, the CD spins, WinPE 5.0 UI appears, the command "X:\Program Files\Acronis\Test Program\trueimage_starter.exe" shows (incidentally, why "trueimage"? but that's not the point) and then... nothing.

Acronis, you haven't test the simpliest thing on earth before releasing your product.
You have done a very mean job on this.
Now, Acronis, how do you think WE potential customers are considering your way of doing business?

Hello Dantony,

we'll contact you privately with a fix for this issue. It will be corrected as soon as possible!

Thank you.

Dear Acronis, please tell me the solution too. I have the same issue like Dantony. I have installed Acronis True Image 2014 before Disk Director 12.

Thank you in advance

All you need to do is add a few files to the WinPE. If you have the DD12 WinPE on a USB stick just copy \sources\boot.wim to a temp folder. I use C:\Temp. Now make a folder called C:\mount. Now go to start menu Windows Kits\Deploynent and Imaging Tools Environment and select Run as Administrator. Enter:

dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:C:\Temp\boot.wim /Index:1 /MountDir:C:\mount

Copy the following files found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\DiskDirector\WinPE\WinPE32 or 64.zip\Files to C:\mount\Program Files\Acronis\Test Program\

kb_link.dll
ManagementConsole.exe
ManagementConsole.exe.manifest
shfolder.dll
systeminfo.exe
unrar.dll

Now go back to the command window and enter:

dism /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:\mount /commit

Now you can close the command window.

Copy the resulting boot.wim from C:\Temp to the USB stick at \sources replacing the existing boot.wim.

Now DD12 will run when the USB stick is booted.

Thank you Mustang, your workaround is working.

I built the rescue ISO with ADK v5.1 on Windows 8.1 Update 1. With the files you told me to add, the UI of Disk Director appears and DD12 is working flawlessly.
For those who didn't find the clone function (perhaps in the Linux based ISO), it is present and operationnal in the WinPE ISO.

Thanks Mrs. Trifonova, I'm curious of your solution.

To Acronis: this event illustrate very well that you release commercial products that are half finished.

The clone function seems to depend on the type of disk being cloned. A Basic MBR disk has the clone function available. A Basic GPT disk does not have the clone function available. I didn't check with dynamic disk, but I suspect they won't clone. I tried to clone a Basic GPT Windows 8.1 disk by using the Copy Volume option one partition at a time. The resulting disk would not boot. Running a Windows Startup Repair failed to fix it.

The Linux and WinPE versions of DD12 seem to function exactly the same.

I booted WinPE and looked in the file structure using DOS commands. Then I compared the files in the Test Program (should probably have been named DiskDirector) folder to the files in the WinPE32.zip file.

It amazes me that Acronis almost always releases buggy new versions of their programs.
This new Disk Director 12 is buggy and caused me a lot of trouble and hell and I do not recommend for anybody to install it on their PC.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit fully updated and it runs flawlessly.
After installing this horrible and buggy program it requested me to restart and of course I restarted.
After the restart my PC booted to the BSOD screen and nothing would fix it until I restored the system to the prior setting with my Windows DVD.
Users do NOT need to go through this type of HELL and shame on Acronis to release this kind of crappy software.
Sorry for my foul language but Acronis MUST stop releasing buggy software and not let us users be their guinea pigs.
Shame on Acronis.
Acronis: please fix this horrible and buggy program ASAP.

Hello Everyone,

we uploaded build 3223 under your accounts which contains fix for this issue.

Please let me know if with this build everything works as expected for you.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply Mrs. Trifonova.

I haven't tested thorougly build 3223, but at least in this build, the UI is launching.

Nevertheless, Mustang is right, neither from the 32 bits WinPE media, nor from the 64 bits one, it isn't possible to clone GPT Disk.

Hello Dantony,

it is true, cloning function is available for only basic MBR disks. Please refer to user guide p. 45.

Thank you.
