Drop Dead error message!

Thread needs solution

Hello.... I upgraded to Version 11 a few days ago, all went well and I had no trouble partitioning disks. Tonight, I deleted a volume to create unallocated space. It appeared to perform OK, but when I booted at the end, I got this error while still in DOS mode, and now can't do anything except reboot and get the error again. Do I have to reinstall Windows to clear this error? (I have no access to Windows) Thanks!!

This happens when the "auto run" information stays enabled (it should remove itself after the first run). I normally don't recommend doing any procedures that require a reboot in Windows -- better to do them when booted to the DD CD.

Are you still unable to get into Windows?

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Hey MubCrab,

thx, for answering that question. (that is actually the only post i found regarding to that error)

I have the same problem like the OP.

It had occured after i had split my primary windows Volume. My computer restarted shortly after the DD11-process was finished. I was making a shutdown at the login-screen. At the next restart the error occured the first time.

After several restarts my computer wont get past that error. Also the internet wont help me (seems i am the only one with that problem).

What i had tried to do:
Windows rescue CD --> bootrec/mbrfix + bootrec/bootfix--> no change
Disk Director 11 rescue CD --> i reversed everything i did before the error --> no change
OSS --> not installed

What i did before i worked with DD11:
I was trying to install a LinuxOS next to my Windows. Didnt worked properly (an error occured while the volumesplit) so i split my volume with DD11.

ThX for Answer =/

Edit: the safe mode isnt working either. It is freezing at the point \Windows\system\DRIVERS\AtiPcie.sys

If a Merge or Split operation fails it can (and usually does) leave the partitions involved in a corrupted state. This is why I don't recommend using these features (unless you have an Entire Disk Image backup or the data on the partitions isn't important).

If you boot to the Windows 7 Repair Disc (or installation DVD) and go to the Command Prompt (cancel out any auto-repair requests), does chkdsk report errors on the Windows partition? Don't run chkdsk /f on it since that will try to fix any problems it finds -- just run chkdsk and see if it reports anything (for example: chkdsk d:).

Otherwise, do the files, folders, etc. on the Windows partition appear to be correct?

Do you have a current backup image of the drive?

The result of chkdsk --> no corrupt files were found on my windows-volume. Neither of the other volumes.
Also DD11 shows me that my volumes are error-free.

I even can access/copy/erase my data. The complete infrastructure is intact.
(Windows-rescue-cd --> computer-repair --> load Driver --> Data access)

"Otherwise, do the files, folders, etc. on the Windows partition appear to be correct?"
Yes, they are appearing correct.

"Do you have a current backup image of the drive?"
Yeah i got one, but i would prefer not to use it until its my only option.

This should fix the problem and let you back into Windows if the partition isn't corrupted (it sounds like it should be okay from what you say):

  1. Boot to the Windows Repair Disc.
  2. Start the Command Prompt.
  3. Determine the drive letter for Windows partition. D: will be used in this example.
  4. Run the following commands (press ENTER after each one):
  5. D:
  6. cd \Windows\System32
  7. dir autopart.*
  8. You should see several files. These normally include autopart.exe, autopart.opt, and autopart.cfg. However, I assume the autopart.cfg file is missing because that causes the error you're getting.
  9. Delete autopart.exe by running this: del autopart.exe
  10. Reboot the computer normally. It should boot into Windows.
  11. Run the Registry Editor (regedit).
  12. Browse to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager
  13. Look at the value for the BootExecute entry. If it contains autopart.exe, edit it and remove just that line.
  14. Close the Registry Editor.

wow, that was soo easy. And it solved the whole thing...
I erased that file and erased the line from the registry entry.

Thanks MudCrab, you are the best =)

This it all very handy and nice to have the forum to find help, thanks - if DD11 does this why is it not fixed by Acronis? + with a description why it happened in the first place!

Thanks for your prompt reply

Mudcrag - Your solution got me back in Windows - thanks - but now whenever I try to perform an operation in DD11 I get

Code: 9,764,877(0x95000D)
Module: C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\DiskDirector\mmsBundle.dll
Message: Failed to perform the requested operation.

Code: 9,764,922(0x95003A)
Message: Cannot activate reboot agent.

Code: 3,539,051(0x36006B)
Message: The requested operation requires machine restart.

Could the problem be that I removed the entire line in the BootExecute entry when I should have just deleted the value?

Possibly. I haven't tested that scenario. You could add it back and see if it makes a difference. For example, a normal Windows 7 BootExecute (a REG_MULTI_SZ type) might be: autocheck autochk *
