Error E000A0460 Unable to merge the partitions Windows XP DD 10

Thread needs solution

Windows XP SP3 Acronis DD 10 build 2.160

I bought a 640GB hard disk to replace the 320GB one in my laptop. I used a standalone SATA disk duplicator to copy from the 320 to the 640. I put the new 640 in and my laptop and is working fine.

The 320 had a 45 GB system partition and a 255 GB data partition, the new hard disk has exactly the same with the addition of a 298 GB of free space. Whatever I do I can't merge or increase the free space to add the free space to the data partition. If I try the increase free space I get the message, "The current size of the selected partition is the maximum possible" and if I try to merge the partitions I get the "Error E000A0460 Unable to merge the partitions"

I've tried doing it from the rescue media boot disk but with the same error.

"Merge" is the wrong function to be using. You want to "Resize". Right-click on the partition that you want to make larger and choose "Resize".

If Disk Director does not let you resize a partition it's probably because it detects file system errors on the partition. Run chkdsk /f to fix these before resizing the partition.

Thanks for the reply.  That was the problem.  I ran CHKDSK and after that I could resize the drive.

I had already tried resize but forgot to mention it in my original post although at that time I couldn't change the value in the partition size box and the increase/decrease arrows were also greyed out so as not to allow me to change the value.  I notice now that there was a red C in the D: partition bar which after fixing the disk errors was gone.

So now I have lots of free space on my D: drive and the 320 GB will replace the 80 GB drive in my Netbook.  This time I'll remember to run CHKDSK before I duplicate.

Thanks again!

cheers
