Failing XP drive not recognized by ADD7 on Win7. How to retrieve files?
Greetings all -
I had an XP drive that was failing; suspect MBR, but not sure.
Thought files were being backed up by AHomeBackup, but discovered that last successful backup was TWO YEARS AGO. *That* would have been nice to know earlier.
Anyways, purchased a new hard drive, installed full version of Win7 and upgraded to Acronis Disk Director 11.
Attach the old XP SATA drive to a USB connector. ADD does not even recognize it. Multiple reboots, remove, unplug, replug, put on sackcloth and ashes, lay hands on it with prayer and meditation, and sacrificed two chickens and a plastic pig on the altar of an old copy of WinME just for giggles.
In Win7's Disk Manager, it "sees" the disk, but recognizes it as unformatted.
In older versions of ADD (v10 on XP), one used to be able to see and recover specific files - which is EXACTLY what I want to do here. However, when I try to install ADD10 on my Win7 machine, I'm told that it won't work with this OS.
So. All I want to do is drag & drop some files from my old, whack XP disk onto my new, shiny Win7 machine.
Can I use ADD11 to do this, or not? If so, how? If not, what do I do?
I don't usually drink this early in the morning, but I'm making an exception today. If you have an idea, I'd be grateful to the point of pouring you a scotch-rocks; if your idea works, I'll buy you a bottle of good scotch (my choice of which one tho...)
Tootles,
