Format in FAT32 with Disk Director 2011 (on boot media)

Thread needs solution

Hello, (excuse my bad english writing..I'm French )

I'm trying to save a lot of time in restoring an HP labtop (Pavilion G7 1131-sf) operations after changing the HDD......like I did with my daughter's Dell Studio

Before changing the HDD I made backups of the "RECOVERY" and "HP_TOOLS" partitions with True Image (Home 2011) and saved them on an external HDD.

On the new one, I created volumes with Disk Director, destined for holding all the "stuff" that was on the previous one :

- a small boot 190 Mo partition at the beginning ...NTFS
- C: for Windows 7...NTFS
- RECOVERY ...NTFS
- HP_TOOLS..unformated because I've got to to do it in FAT32 as it was on the original HDD, and ...Disk Director offers me only FAT16 (+ NTFS,EXT2,3, Linux Swap).

I'm not enough "aware" (lol) in computer matter to know if restoring a partition originally in FAT32 on a partition formated in FAT16 is a big problem or not

I'd like so :
- to have your point of view
- and know why I didn't find how to format in FAT2 ??

Thanks a lot in advance :-)

PLEASE I DO NEED HELP / WHY CAN'T I FORMAT IN FAT32 WITH DISK DIRECTOR HOME 2011 (on boot media) ????

I'm totally stopped in restoring a labtop....because of this :-(

Hi anne34,

Why are you trying to pre-format your new HP_Tools partition? When doing an image restore, as opposed to a file restore, True Image overwrites any previous formatting and will restore an image with its original format. Therefore, suggest you just use your True Image to restore the original HP_Tools partition image that you made onto that new, unformatted, partition.

Regards

First of all thanks a lot to, endly, answer me

In fact I was just asking me the same thing you answered me

BUT when trying to do it :

- after having created the volume without partioning an labeling it with Disk Director

 - when trying to restore the HP_TOOLS onto it,  with True Image ..it doesn't really appear:

it is in light grey tint and is not so a possible location to restore the HP_TOOLS image :-(

Hi again anne34,

O.K. I'm assuming you have created a new 'Primary' Volume in unallocated space, given it an appropriate 'Drive Letter' and labelled it as HP_Tools. Format the new partition as either FAT16 or NTFS and then see whether True Image recognises it. I'm also assuming that you are familiar with Disk Director and therefore know that any changes will not be carried out until you click on the 'Commit' icon (chequered flag).

Regards

In fact waiting for your answer, I tried something else because I saw something weird ...HP_TOOLS image done by True Image was in ....NTFS when I read on many HP forums that it's supposed to be in FAT32.. That's why I first wanted to create a FAT32 partition onto the new HDD to locate it.

To answer your questions :

Yes I created a new Primary Volume in unallocated space but :

- I didn't give it a drive letter, it has been done automatically (G:)

 - I didn't label it ..it has been done by True Image restore

- and yes I know that I've to click on the 'Commit' icon to apply the operation

But what I wanted to do..(as I succeded to do with my daughter's Dell Studio)..doesn't work. Even whith HP_TOOLS partition (+ RECOVERY, of course) on the new HDD..restoring the labtop by F11 at the early starting still brings me back : "NTLDR is missing".

In fact on this laptop the was originally another little (190Mo) partition  at the beginning of the HDD : "boot" that I didn't saved with True Image...may be it was necessary to achieve what I try to do :-(
