GPT Formatting

Thread needs solution

Hi!
I'm using Win 7 Ultimate. Now I bought a Fantec external drive with two slots and installed 2 harddisks (2x2 TB). The external drive works either with Raid 0 or 1. I tried Raid 0 - but Win 7 does not recognize the harddisks. The Fantec support asked me to format the harddisks with GPT. But I have no idea what this is and how it works. My google search didn't help - so far!
Is there someone in this forum who could help me?
Thanks and regards
Rolf

GPT is a more recent way of formatting a drive (Intell), allowing more and bigger partitions amongst other things. With Win7 you can't boot from a GPT format drive but you can use it for mass storage.

Drives using the normal MBR can have a maximum partition of 2TB, so in your case (Raid 0) does that mean it looks like a 4TB drive? - I don't know Raid configurations much!

Rather than repeat everything you can have a look here to begin with.

Thanks a lot! I did read this already. However, it does not offer a solution how to realize the GPT for my external mass-storage drive (total of 4 TB) connected via eSATA.

I'm afraid I don't know enough about RAID to help much. As for formatting your drives I'm guessing you will need to connect and format them independantly from the RAID array somehow. More on formatting with GPT here.

Others here will be able to help more.
