OS Selector spazzes out after Windows Disk Check
Hello all.
I have had Acronis Disk Director for a few months now and have had a few problems with OS Selector. I have a few bootable recovery USB drives and it seems that whenever I leave one connected to my computer on accident after using it, OSS seems to forget that I paid for it and keeps me from editing the options to reset my default and remove the utility USB from it's menu. So far this has happened a few times and has been a minor annoyance.
Today, however, I was managing and synchronizing files on my computer and ran across another hiccup that I had not seen before. I have a separate FAT 32 partition for sharing my documents amongst several OS's. While my sync program was running, the computer locked up entirely. Ultimately I had to hold the power button to shut off the computer. Upon restarting the computer, everything came up just fine. OSS displayed and I selected the OS that I had previously been working in. Windows started up and performed a disk check on my FAT 32 partition (which only has documents and data files, no system files whatsoever). The check ended and errors were fixed. I continued with my file synchronization and shut my computer off and packed it up to go to work.
When I arrived at work, I powered my computer on again and when got to the point where OSS would load, I got a message saying something like "There are no commands for boot, press to reboot" or something to that effect. So I restore my original MBR from a bootable thumbdrive boot into my main Windows partition. Actually, it was a generic MBR, because my touchpad was not instantly recognized. Windows boots and logs into my account automatically and I realize that my touchpad is not working. After trying to use the touchpad for a few seconds, the "found new hardware" notification says I need to reboot my system to complete installation. I assume this is for my touchpad so I allow the computer to reboot.
Then, the weirdest thing happened. I was expecting my computer to boot right into the first Windows partition seeing as I had not done anything else after restoring the Windows MBR. However, Acronis OS Selector came up with all of my previous options and settings. The only difference was that it had detected my utility USB and set it as the default. Other than that, it was as if nothing ever happened. So I select my main Windows partition, boot into it and repair OSS by attempting to install it again. I restarted my computer (removing the utility USB before the reboot) and everything seems to be functioning normally. I made sure that I was able to change things in OSS and had no further problems.
So here are my questions. Was it the disk check function that caused OSS to freak out? On one hand I believe it is because the disk check occurred between two different times that the computer loaded OSS. On the other hand, the partition on which the disk check was performed only contained documents and data files. It was separate from any system partition. Second, how did OSS seemingly reappear by itself after I had restored the MBR to a Windows MBR? I don't claim to know how OSS works exactly, but if it replaces the MBR, then my restore would've wiped it out. If it alters the Windows MBR to include OSS in the boot process before any kernel is loaded, then I would think a restoration of an unaltered Windows MBR would eliminate that as well. Ultimately, I want to know more about what happened and weather or not it has the potential of happening again or becoming a bigger issue. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
