OSS from boot CD

Thread needs solution

How long will it be before we can run OSS (repair, activate etc) from the boot CD? I'm talking about the DD11 version of course.

This is not an optional "extra". OSS is quite useless if you can't repair it from the boot CD. I've had a problem with the MBR at least 3 times since upgrading (couldn't [possibly have anything to do with this new version of OSS) and it's a real pain to fix it.

What's the point of only being able to fix OSS from a Windows partition if you CAN'T BOOT?

Can we please make a priority of this? This is *basic functionality* of any boot manager (in fact some can only be managed from a boot disk or CD)

I totally agree with you and have posted the exact same sentiment. It is ridiculous that OSS has been put out without this ability and makes it a worthless product in my estimation. I am moving on to BootItNG and have to seriously think if I will ever buy or update an Acronis product again. If BootItNG works well, I may say goodbye to Acronis for good.

I find Disk Director 11 currently works well for me, especially from the boot CD, and I thank Acronis for making that functionality work much more smoothly. But even there they removed some needed manipulations on partitions. But I will keep it for the time being, although I do not know if I will upgrade it again, or continue to use it in the future.

Like you I am tired of software companies who put out new releases in which functionality is less or, like OSS, hopelessly retrograde compared to previous releases. There is no point in having a Boot Manager which can not restore its functionality at boot-up time, and OSS is now that hopeless product. It is too ridiculous to be believed unless Acronis just wanted to lose DD single user business and this is their way of doing so. Almost as bad is that OSS for DD 10 had Windows 7 booting correctly without having to do anything manually and after installing OSS for DD11 Windows 7 bootup has disappeared entirely from the OSS menu and its bootup file and directory are gone ! But on to BootItNG ! Good luck !

We'll surely add OS Selector components in the next official build of Acronis Disk Director 11 Home.

Can you give us a rough time frame? Will it be more like weeks or months?

I would start talking about rebates - but I've already wasted way more time than any rebate can compensate for. (actually, DD11 is not expensive - but why pay *any* money to make things worse?)

Hello John!

Thank you for your comment!

I clearly see that this sitation is upsetting you, and I completely understand your concern. Unfortunately we do not have any timeframes regarding release date of Acronis Disk Director 11 update. This is the question for the Development team.

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience caused and will surely forward your comment to the Management team so that they could be aware of the issue and improve the situation.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Thanks for your reply Yana. I think I'll check out a different boot manager this weekend.

Hello John and Edward,

I had to remove Ilya's post to avoid any confusions. The problem is that it is not yet confirmed that OSS will be added to bootable media in the next update.

As you probably know we did not even plan to add OSS to new version of Disk Director Home 11 initially, however at beta testing stage there was very much negative feedback from our Customers about this fact. So at the last stage we changed our plans and included OSS per customer's requests to new version of Disk Director. There were no changes done in that module apart Windows 7 support.

The problem with Media Builder is that it is completely new - taken from Corporate product line (Acronis Backup & Recovery) and it does not "know" about OSS existence. We do understand that this is a major inconvenience for our Customers and the issue has already been escalated to senior management and development. We are optimistic that all the issues will now be ironed out. We just need some more time to focus on this module.

Thanks,

Andrey.

Well Andrey, I've switched to a different boot manager now - so I don't need to worry about OSS ever again. One of the things that I really liked about OSS was that you could call Disk Director from it, but now
- you can't call DD11 from OSS
- even if you could, DD11 has been "dumbed down"

So I'll just use DD10 with my (not Acronis) new boot manager - and I'll forget about all future upgrades.

I feel better already ;-)

PS

Thanks to Mudcrab! You are doing a maginificent job - but they sure aren't making it easy for you.

Thanks. And you're right. Some problems just can't be fixed (correctly) because of how Acronis changed DD/OSS.

Can I ask what “a different boot manager” you are using, I’m just another “happy customer” who spend hours of his time to fix computer after installing Disk Director 11, without basic options to fix it.
Regards. Peter D

I mentioned my sentiment in my other posting in this forum about Acronis taking a functional, useful product, and appearing to want to make Disk Director Home a [dumbed-down / beginner / less functional] program.  They hint that perhaps they might come out with an alternate, more advanced version, as opposed to the "Home" version. (If any customers are left, that is.)

All of us customers working on multiple partitions and drives, by definition, are already ADVANCED users! There is no place for taking an advanced tool, for advanced work, and removing "advanced" features! It's absurd! We are paying them for an upgrade, which is essentially a downgrade

Here's an analogy:  It's as if you had brain surgery equipment for skilled surgeons, and brain surgery equipment for beginners.  It's already brain surgery, so there's no place for a dumbed-down set of tools! That might apply to photo editing programs, for example, where a beginner and advanced versions make sense, but not a disk and partition management and manipulation utility.

FYI: OSS was the reason I bought into Acronis in the first place, and it's the one tool I use the most (True Image being 2nd). Having it available on the boot CD is critical (I needed it today, was suprised to find it missing, and even more suprised to find I couldn't add it). Please add my address to the list of those you will contact the instant the ability to add it to the boot disk becomes available.
