partition copy very slow

Thread needs solution

I just purchased DD to copy a partition on one external usb drive to another partition on a 2nd drive connected to a different USB connection on the system.

I'm trying to copy a 160GB NTFS partition on an XP system. After running for 24 hours it's only 25% complete. Any suggestions why this is running so slow.

Hello Bill,

Thank you for using Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0

The program behavior is abnormal, the operation should take only several minutes.

To increase the performance please switch your external hard drive to "Optimize for performance" mode:
a. Right-click the My Computer icon and then click Manage.
b. Click the Device Manager icon.
c. Click the plus (+) sign next to Disk Drives.
d. Double-click the USB hard drive string.
e. Click the Policies button then click Optimize for performance and mark all checkboxes.
Compare the performance. Also I would recommend you to perform the operation under Acronis Bootable Rescue Media.
Please log in to your account, go to the Registered products and downloads section -> Bootable media. Download the file (the serial number should be registered).
You can find more information on how to burn an ISO image to a CD here
Boot the system from this CD,  please check in your computer's BIOS if booting from removable media (CD-ROM) is allowed and switched on and execute the operation. Acronis Booting Rescue Media is based on a Linux operating system, the program will handle your hardware in a different way.
Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.
