Partition numbers discovery

How do I find partition numbers from disk director 12 - especially when running from (Linux) bootable media?
I have a strong feeling that older versions like DD10 would show you the partition number, but I cannot find any way with DD12.
The reason is that on a Windows installation it is necessary to know the partition number to set boot.ini correctly. I know there are tools such as diskpart when the system is booted, but it doesn't help much when it won't boot.
Tried to find the information in the partition view of the disk editor with no result. Trying to run the disk editor help just caused it all to lock up.
