replacing Vista64 hdd

Thread needs solution

Trying to help out a friend with a dying hdd. Having used DD9 on XP Pro for years, I picked up a copy of DD11 for support for the newer OSs.

The old hdd only gets errors on the 5th step when verifying the free space. It will boot and sometimes run for a period, especially when running in safe mode.

I didn't want to clone the disk if it has problems with free space, so tried just copying the two partitions to the new WD Green hdd. All it did was keep rebooting without displaying anything on the screen. So I went ahead and cloned the drive, but got the same results. I used the downloaded bootable ADD Home 11 disc for all attempts.

This Gateway system has a restore partition called PQSERVICE that is 14.65gb in size. I've already saved all the user data, but don't have any restore media to start over. The drives are SATA.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Are you referring to stage 5 of chkdsk?

When does the reboot happen? Is it before, during, or after you tell DD to do the procedure. Does it fail before any changes get made or does it work for a bit first?

In case it's a controller issue, you could check in the BIOS and switch the SATA controller to IDE Compatible mode (may be called something different) and see if it helps. If it's already in IDE mode, try AHCI, if it's available. Then boot the DD CD and see if you get a different result. If this works, remember to switch it back to the original mode before trying to boot into Windows.

Many times, recovery partitions can be triggered manually by setting the partition Active and making sure the type is correct (FAT32, for example) and then rebooting the computer.

Do you have a backup image of the drive (with True Image, for example)?
