Resize OS Partition SBS2003 RAID5

Thread needs solution

Hi All,

I have an issue with an SBS2003 server in that it is rapidly running out of space on C: which is 25GB and 7% free. I've yet to do any maintnence on it, but the client wants the partition extending. The D: partition is >500GB with 400GB free. The disks are 3 x 300GB in RAID5. Is it possible to use Disk Director Server to take some space from D: and extend C: easily? I'm assuming that D: can be reduced whilst the server is online, but the OS partition needs to be done from bootable media with the server offline? If so, what is the likely downtime window so I can inform the users?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Is the computer using Dynamic Disks? If so, DDS may not support it.

Resizing the D: partition will take the longest because it needs to move data. Resizing the C: partition should take only a few seconds.

Have you booted the computer to the DDS CD to make sure it can see the RAID5 setup correctly? DDS may do the resize during Windows startup and not need to use the Linux mode. However, it would still be good to know that you can boot to the DDS CD and work with the RAID5 setup, if necessary. (This is assuming that DDS can't resize C: when Windows is running. I haven't used DDS before.)

When you resize D:, make sure to do it so that the unallocated space ends up after the C: partition (before the D: partition) and not after the D: partition. Most likely, this would require shrinking D: from the left side.

For example:
[C: 25GB][D: 500GB] >> resize D: >> [C: 25GB][unallocated 50GB][D: 450GB]

Then, resize C: >> [C: 75GB][D: 450GB]

Many thanks for your assistance. I haven't tried whether DDS can see the RAID5 setup as yet, because i haven't purchased it or downloaded the trial on this server. I'm going to try and source a similar server and try on there, I just wanted to know if, in principle, DDS supported resizing OS partitions on a RAID5 setup
