Resizing partition on 4kb sector disk
I am running:
-Windows XP Pro 32b
-Areca 1120 Raid Controler
-3 WD 2Tb sata drives configured in raid-5
In order to be able to adress all HD space within XP the Areca controler had to give HD's a (non-standard) sector size of 4Kb in stead of the standard 512b
After installing an extra 2Tb drive and expanding the raidset and volumeset, the system getsappr. 1800Gb extra unallocated space on the "right" of the existing partition.
Although Acronis Disk Director 10.0 sees the extra unallocated space, it is not able to resize the old partition so that unallocated space is added.
I can move the unallocated space "after" to unallocated space "before" but the old partition size cannot be altered.
The unallocated space can be used by creating a new partition without a problem but I would rather enlarge the existing partition.
Areca support replied with:
generally controller do not touch anything on filesystem and partitions, they are totally system depends.
your situation looks like a software problem, your disk management utility may not able to manage this kind of device or modification. due to the XP do not support standard LBA64 addressing mode for over 2TB devices, so you should use 4KB sector size instead LBA64. the 4KB is not a standard sector size which some software may not able to properly handle it. have you ever contact with the software vendor for assist ?
Is there a way to resize this 4kB-sector partition?
Regards,
Vincent

Thanks for your input KOLO,
I give up trying to contact Acronis Support, it seems utterly impossible to contact them with a product in demo state........
PS,
nm, found the solution, there is a routine called DISKPART.EXE from MS which does the resize-job I was searching for perfectly within seconds
