Splitting parttions with DD v. 10 -- How?

Thread needs solution

I got a new Dell Win7 machine a few days ago. It came with a 650 GB C-hard disk. So I want it to split it into 60 GB (Win7 OS) and 590 GB (for data storage) partitions with DD v. 10. Among DD version, Win7 allowed to install only build 2160. "Commit" proceeded without any problem. But it failed to split the C-HD. I repeated the same process three times but all failed in splitting. Could someone help me how to succeed in splitting partitions? TIA Kim

I would avoid using the Split and Merge features. They can cause all sorts of problems.

It's recommended to have an Entire Disk Image backup before making partitioning changes.

Boot to the DD CD to make the changes. If the Full Mode version doesn't see the drives correctly, try the Safe Mode version.

Resize the Windows partition smaller and apply the change. Then you can create a new partition in the unallocated space.

Note: Resizing the booting partition may cause it not to boot if the starting sector changes. Do you have a standard Microsoft OEM or retail Windows 7 DVD? If not, create the repair CD using the Windows 7 program before you begin (Start >> Maintenance >> Create System Repair Disc).

Thanks MudCrab,
I already split the C-drive into two partitions.
My computer runs just fine.
BTW, I already made the fitst tib backup (before splitting the C-drive) with TI v. 2009.
It seems TI v. 2009 works well with Windows 7. I even restored Win7 with the backup tib (becasue there was a subtle problem). It was smooth.

MudCrab,

I was reading your post again. Here is my question:

>Boot to the DD CD to make the changes. If the Full Mode version doesn't see the drives >correctly, try the Safe Mode version.

My question is what DD CD are you referring to? Are you referring to the original DD CD or bootable media builder? I would like to boot with DD cd to make more changes. Your comment would be appreciated.

Are you the "In Kim" I helped before? If so, sorry I didn't recognize the name right off. It's been about a year since I've heard from you. Hope you're well and welcome to the new forum.

The DD CD to which I'm referring is the one created with Media Builder. However, you can now also download an ISO file from your Acronis account. This version may have more current drivers than the one created with Media Builder. You can use whichever CD works properly.

If you have the retail version of DD and it came with a bootable CD, it's probably an older build. However, the main thing is that whichever CD you use, that it sees drives correctly.

MudCrab,

I downloaded the iso file and burnt a CD. With this media builder, it did not work on Win7 machine. So I created media builder from v. 10 (build 2,160). This worked flawlessly.
I shrinked the 290 GB OS partition into 60 GB OS partition. It worked nicely.
