While Splitting C Partition, hybernate mode kicks in...

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to split my primary C: volume into 2 partitions. I used the Disk Directors "Split" option. After setting the sizes of the partitions, you are given the option of selecting files to move to the new partition. I selected the My Documents files, Click OK, and you are then prompted to reboot which I did. When the computer starts back up, you are shown a black screen with white letters showing the status of the operation. Everything seems to be going to OK. Then, it get to the second phase which is either creating (or moving) files to the new partition (I can't remember). the computer then enters hybernate mode after about 15 minutes. the screen is now completely black. I take the computer out of hybernate mode (fn-F4) and it resumes but the screen is still completely black. the harddrive light is lightly flashing on/off. not sure if it is doing anything

My question is, is the process still working? It has been over 1 hour now. The size of the files copied to the new partition is about 200gig. So I could see it taking a long time to copy (if this is what is going on). I haven't done anything yet. Should a force power off the computer? or give it a few more hours so see if it finishes.

I'm hoping someone has tried splitting the C: drive using the split option and can give me a sense for how long this should take given the size of my harddrive (500g).
Thanks in advance...

UPDATE: After 3 hours, i force/powered down the computer. the computer started up as usual and the entire operation was cancelled. Nothing was partitioned! I am really hestitate now to try this. it's a good thing that everything is exactly as it was, but there was no mention in the user guide about disabling the hybernate mode. makes me wonder if this feature will even work if I try it again.

You're very fortunate that the drive was not corrupted. I don't recommend using the Split and Merge features of DD since both partitions can be lost if something goes wrong. Additionally, if you do use them, make sure to create an Entire Disk Image backup first and to do the procedure using the DD boot CD and not using the "reboot" method in Windows.

Instead of using Split, I recommend doing the steps manually. This requires resizing the C: partition smaller and then creating the new partition. It may take several times if you don't have enough room to copy all the files on the first run. Doing it this way gives you more control over the procedure and you know each step has completed successfully or failed.

You could also copy off the files to another drive (like a USB drive) and then you would have more free space available to shrink C:. After the new partition has been created, copy the files to it from the other drive.

I have never tried splitting the My Documents folder off of the Windows partition using DD. I assume you know that this is a Windows/User folder and requires special care when moving or it won't function correctly afterwards. Personally, I would just move the contents (as suggested above) and then move the folder correctly (in Windows) before copying the files back to it.
