Windows XP MCE 2005 OEM (HP) - computer starts with BSOD Stop Error (0x0000007b, 0x0f78e524, 0x00000034)

Thread needs solution

My computer is a HP Pavillion m7680n with dual boot Windows/Ubuntu and shows the Stop error message: Stop Error (0x0000007b, 0x0f78e524, 0x00000034)
when trying to boot into WinXP, however, booting into Ubuntu is still possible. Is there a way that I can repair this from Ubuntu? Does the fact that I have a dual boot (GRUB) setup make things worse.

I have tried: Booting from the recovery DVD but they report a file missing
I can boot into Acronis Disk Director Recovery but am not sure how to fix the error as the disk drives are mixed up. System has 2 HD of 250 megs each partitioned into 4 partitions.
Also booted from a previous copy of XP Home same error message.

I believe that one of the intel drivers has been corrupted as it seems Windows does recognise the drives.

All files appear to be still on the drive if I view the tree in Ubuntu

I can boot using a USB drive (option's there in the CMOS) if that's a solution

Thank you for any help or insight you can bring as I try to fix this problem.

Hello Martin Brown,

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

BSOD with 0x0000007b code means that your restored system does not have correct HAL driver for booting. This issue cannot be fixed by system repair. Could you please clarify, how exactly have you restored your image? Where have you taken the image, from the same PC or from another one?

Which program have you used to restore? Could you please provide me with the exact sequence of actions that lead to the issue you report, so that I can try to reproduce it?

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Thank you for your reply Alexander Nikolsky

First what started this was:
1) Used Acronis Disk Director (can't remember the version number creation date 22 Feb 2007) to move a partition to the front of secondary hard drive D:
2) On committing and rebooting etc ADD did its magic
3) On returning to windows I discovered that I had lost a chunk of data (D:\My Documents)
4) Used Recuva (Piriform) to find as many files and save them to another drive
5) Open ADD again and saw that the partition were mixed up. Letters and drive names were scrambled.
6) Main Drive or boot drive had an extra partition
7) Major Panic !!
8) Rebooted and saw the BSOD (haven't seen one since Win95)
9) Rebooted chose Ubuntu from the GRUB menu (sigh of relief: it loaded)
10) In Ubuntu I can see all the partitions on both 250 Ghz drives and all the files
11) Tried the recover ADD CD I made when installing the program
Ran out of confidence as to my ability to understand what to do next
So wrote to you.

Thank you for any help you can give me

Windows XP MCE patched to SP3, all updated, etc from MS updates
2 250Ghz drives
Main Drive C: partitioned into 2 NTFS partitions and 2 ext3 + 1 FAT32 for HP Recovery
Drive D: partitioned into 5 NTFS (I think)

Hello Martin,

Thank you for your response.

We are unable to find the reason of the issue without additional information. Could you please generate Acronis Report and attach it to the next post?

Since the system is unbootable, I am sending a link to you via PMs to burn Acronis Report utility to a CD disk and to run it from a CD.

Thank you.

Thank you for your response - I managed to get into the drive by using gparted and then formatting it in Ubuntu. Then ADD rescue disk recognized the drive partition so I reformatted it as a NTFS partition and re-installed the OS.
