Soft Read Error Rate

I have a Maxtor drive, just acquired second hand, which passes all of the normal drive tests using Powermax and Seatools. It sems to run well but the Drive monitor shows fluctuating scores on Soft Read Error rate.
Max was 23 and then it returned to 7. Scores Zero after formatting (including a low level format - all zeros) but then builds up again in use, even if the drive is just idle as the storage drive.
Anybody seen this before? It says in various places that this could mean imminent failure for any positive score! Another remark says not to worry immediately!
Any suggestions?
