ABR10 MS Exchange Backup

Thread needs solution

What is the difference between Information Store [IS] and Mailboxes when backing up using ABR10 MS Exchange Backup? Will I be able to restore any mailboxes if I just back up the [IS]? Do I need to back up both? What is the best practice for this?

BTW...i have about 350 mailboxes and it will take extremely long time to backup the mailboxes.

Thanks

Hello Chio Phanh,

Thank you very much for your questions. I will definitely help you.

First of all, I would like to clarify something. We have Acronis Recovery for MS Exchange which allows to create a backup of information stores or mailboxes and we also have Acronis Backup and Recovery 10, which creates partitions images including the database files, provided the transactions were paused during snapshot creation. Please check this article for additional information.

For information regarding the difference between information store and mailboxes I would recommend the following detailed article from our Knowledge Base.

As a best practice, I would strongly recommend to you Information Store backup for most backup operations with Exchange server instead of Maibox backup type. The Information Store backup provides the same recovery capabilities as the Mailbox backup (you can restore separate mailboxes or even mails from Information Store backup as well) while Information Store backup is much more faster. The Mailbox backup functionality has been originally designed to perform backups of some limited number of important mailboxes, while for backing up the entire Exchange database you should use Information Store backup.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.
