Recovering Exchange database from image backups

Thread needs solution

We had a failure of our Windows Small Business Server 2003. Since we have purchased Acronis True Image SBS and Acronis True Image Exchange Backup, I'd like to ask some questions regarding the system restore.

The current state is as follows:

* I cannot login into system because of unresolved system issue with activation (we have a legal license, however the activation system is messed up, so I cannot login, therefore we need to recover working copy of the system)

* Acronis True Image SBS is not creating backups anymore because of error Problem Info: Unable to open (initialize) computer
Problem Details: Unable to load snapshot manager library (0x100004)
Tag = 0x8D5BF87C202E86A5

* Network, Exchange is working correctly, however our CRM system is messed up (in addition to the whole login/activation system issues)

1) I was able to backup the *current* Exchange db, SQL and other data through True Image SBS Image/File Backup (which I am booting from cd). Acronis Exchange Backup did not work, since I was not able to log into the system and there are no boot CDs for Acronis Exchange Backup. I've tried remote management console as well, but it seems that the system is messed up completely, so it didnt work.
2) I am planning to restore a full backup of the working server image, which is 2 weeks old (2 weeks ago was the last successful backup, later backups were not created because of the error described above).
3) However, after restoring the working backup, I tried to restore *current* data: Exchange and SQL files. Again through True Image SBS file restore booted from cd. The progress bar was showing that the process would take 10 hours. After 5 hours of restoring, it showed 30 hours until the finish (the Exchange databases and SQL db is around 12GB in size, restoring from usb2.0 external hard disk)

Now, I have the following questions:

A) Is it allright that the process of restoring Exchange DB through True Image SBS should last 35 hours!?
I'd prefer using Acronis Backup for Exchange, however I am not able to run it on non-working system.

B) After the 30hour restore process, will I have a working Exchange database with *current* data?
Because I've read somewhere, that Exchange 2003 databases are not "pluggable" (when comparing to Exchange 2007) that means you cannot just copy new database files and hope that you've got new data in Exchange mailboxes. But the user guide of Acronis True Image SBS includes a note that this tool supports MS Exchange and SQL database files... not exacltly brick level backup, but it should be supported (I just need to restore my whole information store).

C) Any other suggestions for the restoreation process? I am planning to do it on Friday, because I don't want to interrupt the work of the office until the weekend.

Thank you for any suggestions, I'd like to have a working SBS server on Monday...

Hello Juraj!

Welcome to our Forum and thank you for finding time to share your experience with us. I entirely understand your concern and will be glad to help you.

Since currently we do not have many options, there are 2 ways to restore the system and DB:

  1. Restore the System to the working state and then, separately, restore the latest database backu
If the latest database backup was long ago, then you can
  2. Restore the latest backup created from the bootable media with the latest data. Unfortunately since the machine was corrupted on the moment of image creation, and the backup of database was performed in Files and Folders mode we cannot guarantee that you will restore safe and stable DB (though still we do not expect any issues with it). Database backup is definitely supported in Acronis True Image for Microsoft Small Business Server.

The restore process time depends on many factors, like the backup location an amount of data, but normally it doesn't take that long. I'd advise you to download the latest bootable media from your account, burn it onto the CD and use instead of the one you own - this may help to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Hello Yana,
thank you very much for your answer, it helped me a lot.

I spent the whole weekend in the work trying to resolve this issue. After many retries, caused by "disk full" error, I've been successful with the following solution:

1. Restoring system to the working system (with the old data)
2. Booting into the new system
3. Dismounting Exchange Information Store, shutting down Exchange services
4. Deleting all Exchange database files (in MDBDATA folder)
5. Mounting the most recent backup image using Acronis True Image SBS as a virtual disk
6. Manually copying the old database files from the image file to the new location
7. Starting Exchange services, re-mounting the information store
8. It worked! :-)
