ASD - no onboard NIC detected

Thread needs solution

I've seen a lot of issues on the forums regarding this particular model.
Just got off tech support chat who confirmed there are no drivers for that model in the Boot Image creator. Hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer for their engineers to generate an update (sent them the AcronisInfo results).

Meanwhile, for those who want to run Windows 7 x64, search Dell's site for R230202. (of course, no need to install the entire package).

Hope that helps anyone.

Hello IT Admin and Bryan V!

IT Admin, thank you for opening the thread and many thanks to Brian for bringing this question up.

I have checked our resources and found out that currently everything should be included into the product and a bootable media. Should the product still fail to recognise the NIC, it means that there was some glitch with the drivers assigning. So in this case we would suggest you to:

  1. Download new Bootable Media in *iso format from your account
  2. Update PXE server:
I have sent you the links with the instructions, and would appreciate if you could kindly test this solution

Should the issue persist, we will need the following information:

  1. Exact sequence of steps performed before you encountered this issue
  2. The screenshot of the problem
  3. Linux report from the Bootable Media

Please gather this information and submit an support request. I would also appreciate if you could kindly let me know the case number, so that I could make sure that it is handled in a proper way.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Problem with NIC detected on IBM x3250M3 Server and Laptop ASUS N61VG.
I have already downloded the new version of SNAP Deploy 3 Build 3329 (ISO boot image) few weeks ago.
I tested it on IBM x3250 M3 server.
SNAP Deploy 3 (Vers 3329) can not NIC detected on IBM x3250M3 server.
The same problem I have got with ASUS Laptop N61VG Series.
Any sugestions?

Hello JacekD!

Thank you for your message and for sharing your experience with us!

In case the downloaded Bootable Media fails to recognise the NIC, it means that it suffers from the lack of drivers. We will be glad to update the media, but for this we will need Acronis Linux Report.

Could you please kindly gather it and submit a support request? Should there be any procrastination with the reply from support, please let us know, we will speed up the process.

I would also appreciate if you could kindly let us know whether you have updated PXE according to the instructions I have forwarded to you yestreday and whether it worked.

Thank you in advance for cooperation!

YANA My hopes were dashed!!!. Now when i try to create a template with the new image, acronis says:

"The selected file is not an acronis snap deploy management console archive".

What can i do?

Hello Jorge Gonzalez,

Thank you for your post. I will definitely help you with this issue.

Can you please let me know where do you store your image. This specific error message indicates, that the backup file is corrupt. However, it does not necessarily mean that it is corrupt because, depending on the image location, the data could get corrupt during the transfer.

I would appreciate if you could check my post regarding this issue in this thread, and also check the following article from our Knowledge Base that helps troubleshoot issues with corrupt backups.

If you continue to experience issues or have any other questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hello Yana,
I made steps described in the mail. Then, with the Acronis Snap Console, I generated the new bootable media (iso image). Currently, the program correctly detects network interfaces on IBM Server x3250M3.
Regards,
JacekD

Hi.

I updated snap deploy with the yana's instructions, and seems to be ok. But when i try to use a new image template, always the same error.

"The selected file is not an acronis snap deploy management console archive".

Its seems that the server has been corrupted with de updates. I cant use any template (after functions). Whats happen¿??

Thank you.

Hello Jacek and Jorge!

Jacek, thank you for finding time to inform us that currently the issue is resolved, we really appreciate your cooperation!

Jorge, thank you for finding time to report about the new problem. I would like to assure you that update process doesn't corrupt anything. So for this issue there can be several problems, and we would appreciate if you could kindly follow the instructions mentioned by Anton so that we could have a clear picture of the issue.

Thank you!

Hi there,

I am unable to find the network card for some new laptops we have purchased - newly released HP Elitebook 8540w model. The Network Card according to device manager is a 'Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection'.

I have read above that I need to download updated "Bootable Media", which I have done, but I don't have the instructions on what to do with that ISO file. Please send them to me so I may try that method before going further.

Thank you!

Jeremy

PS: I realize this isn't the right forum topic as the model doesn't match, but the issue is the same, so I didn't want to start a new one for the same problem. Please move if necessary, and I apologize if that's the case.

Hello Jeremy!

Welcome to Acronis Forum, we are glad to greet you here!

You were right submitting your request here, this thread is related to the issues with detecting NIC, regardless the model, and we will definitely help you!

You need to burn the ISO image using appropriate writing software such as Nero or Roxio Easy CD Creator which runs on your computer. This image is a full working copy of the boot disc for Acronis Snap Deploy. After you create a boot disc from the downloaded file, please check its functionality and inform us if there are any problems.

We recommend you to refer to the following article if you are not familiar with ISO burning.

In case you are using PXE server and it cannot detect NIC, you will need to update it as well. Let me know if it is required - I will send you the links and the instructions.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Hi Yana,

I am booting using PXE. Where I am hung up is when I try to create a master image file. It loads as though everything is fine, but when I reach the point regarding NIC properties, it is all blank and I cannot adjust or see anything. Can you please send me the directions on how to update the PXE so that I may create my master image files with the one new laptop I've configured, and deploy the image out to the remainder of the machines?

Thank you in advance for sending me the instructions.

Regards,

Jeremy

Dear Jeremy!

Thank you for specifying the details!

Yana,

First of all thank you for you help in the other topic. The new boot media works.
I now want to test the PXE functions so I will need to update the PXE server with the new drivers as well. Can you provide me with instructions please ?

Thank you.

Hello,

I have the same problem with onboard nic (Dell Optiplex 380). I am booting using PXE, onboard nic is not detected.
Could you send me information on updating PXE server ?

Any word on the "The selected file is not an Acronis Snap Deploy Management Console Archive" error? I highly doubt all of our machines suddenly developed a memory problem.

Dear Fabrice and  Mike!

Fabrice, thank you for letting me know that the issue got resolved, I'm glad to know it! Should you have any additional questions or concerns - do not hesitate to share them with me!

Mike, thank you for finding time to report about the issue.

I've searched our internal resources for this error message, and wasn't able to find any known issues related to it. So this particular case requires investigation. Could you please obtain the following information:

  1. Procmon output (start Process Monitor Tool, reproduce the issue, save the output)
  2. Acronis Info from the machine with the Deployment Server
  3. Exact sequence of steps performed
  4. Screenshot of the error

After that please contact support directly with the information attached and let me know the case number. This issue is very important for us, and I will be very grateful if you could provide me with this data.

Thank you in advance for cooperation.

Same problem when booted from CD. It's obvious this is a Snap Deploy problem. I'll just wait for an official update, in the meantime I'll be exploring other imaging solutions.

Hello Yana,

Yesterday, I created an image using Acronis Master Image Creator (booting from PXE).
This morning I wanted to use the snap agent deploy but i've got an error message :

"Unable to load initial ramdisk" followed by a "kernel panic" message.

I've got same error if I boot from CD.

Could you help me ?

Regards,
Fabrice.

Hello Mike and Fabrice!

Thank you for your comments!

Mike, I completely share your concern and understand your decision not to bother obtaining the diagnostic information. Let me know whether there is anything I can do for you - I will be glad to.

Fabrice, thank you for reporting about this issue.

Usually it happens in the case the update download was corrupted, so let me offer you another liknk via PM with new instructions.

I would appreciate if you could kindly keep us posted regarding this question.

Thank you!

I'm having the same issue with Optiplex 380s. When attempting to use Snap Deploy via PXE server, no NIC is detected.

I've updated to the latest build (v3329) but there was no change. Tried the bootable media and it was able to recognize the NIC.

Can I get a copy of those instructions for updating the PXE?
Thanks.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem.

Thanks a lot

Hi Yana,

I followed the instructions you sent me, which did force it to recognize the NIC (and it appears to have created an image successfully now via the PXE), but now when I try to deploy the image to another like machine it tells me, 'Unable to load initial ramdisk. Press (Enter) to proceed..." When I press "Enter", it sends me to an Acronis loading screen with a Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount roof fs on unknown-block(1,0)

Thoughts or direction please? I NEED to get this working asap! Thanks.

Jeremy

Hello all!

Thank you for your comments!

Harmeet, Olivier, please, check your PM, I have forwarded you the instructions with all necessary links.

Jeremy, thank you for reporting about this inconvenience. As I already mentioned in the comment that addressed Fabrice request, this usually happens in case the download was eitehr corrupted or an error occurred during the update process.

I would suggest you to reload the files from the new archive (just sent it to you via PM) and that reconfigure PXE to contain the Agent (see chapter 6 in the User's Guide).

Please keep me posted regarding this issue, so that I could provide you with further assistance if needed.

Thank you!

Dear Olivier!

Thank you for reporting about it!

I'm sorry for the inconvenience with PM, it may take a while to arrive. I have just checked it and can see it assigned to your account.

Could you please kindly check once again and let me know in case there are any further problems?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Hopefully another Acronis Moderator is watching this. I did the steps Yana suggested and I am still getting the same problems as above. When doing the items in Chapter 6, I believe I am doing them correctly. I reinstalled the Acronis components and am still getting the "Unable to load initial ramdisk. Press to proceed..."

Please help me as I *need* to get this working.

Jer

did you get this error message?

Unable to load initial ramdisk press enter
loading please Wait
please Wait
kernel panic- not Synicing :VFS: unable to Mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
My server is still not working...

Tony:

That's the one. I am at a complete standstill and I *NEED* to get boxes imaged and deployed. I am really disappointed thusfar that there isn't an updated version or bug-fix that can fix this easier/faster than waiting on a moderator to respond all day long. This is less than ideal.

Jeremy.

Hello Yana,

Now with the new files you send me in PM I have the same problem as Tony.

Can you help me again ?

Thank you

Regards,

Olivier

Hello Jeremy, Tony and Olivier!

Thank you for your comments and for keeping us posted.

I completely understand your concern, and be sure I'm doing my best to help you and quite positive that you are doing everything correctly. I have contacted  our Experts team yesterday evening regarding this issue, and they suggested as a workaround to update bootwis.sys.

This component is included by default into the packages you were provided with, could you please change this files in the bootable components directories as you did with kernel.dat and ramdisk.dat (please keep in mind that each bootwiz.sys file is related only to its particular folder, this bootwiz of Master Image Creator will suit only Master Image Creator)?

Put bootwiz.sys from any of the downloaded archives to

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\MediaBuilder

This should help to resolve the problem.

I would apperciate if you could let us know whether it fixed the issue.

Jeremy, I completely understand your concern, and in case you are in need of immediate assistance I would advise you to contact our support directly via chat, phone or webrequest.

I'd like to thank you, guys, for cooperation and patience - we really appreciate it.

We'll be waiting for your replies impatiently.

Thank you!

I have the same problem with onboard nic (Dell Optiplex 380). I am booting using PXE, onboard nic is not detected.

Yana could you send me information on updating PXE server?

Hello BV!

Sure, with pleasure. I have just forwarded you all the information via PM, please check it and let me know whether you didn't receive.

Thank you for cooperation!

Yana,

I've done that, and it still generates the same error. Do I need to reconfigure the PXE server after having replaced the bootwiz.sys file?

If this doesn't work, yes, I will contact the Support team. I only just found out late last night that we paid for phone support, despite it not showing up in our account. Otherwise I would have done that long ago.

Thanks for your help.

Jeremy

Dear Jeremy,

Thank you for your comment.

I hope that mentioning support contacts didn't offend you: I just wasn't aware whether you know the better way to contact tech support team. And it is always good to know that in case there is any procrastination with the reply on Forum, your customer will be anyway taken care of. I'm really sorry if you found my comment offending or upsetting, please, accept my apologies.

Yes, you are perfectly correct: after replacing bootwiz.sys file PXE server should be reconfigured again for changes to get applied.

I'm sorry for solution of the issue takes so long, but I'm quite positive that this suggestion will fix the problem.

Please, if possible, keep us posted regarding the issue progress.

Thank you!

Hi Yana,

No, you didn't offend me at all. Until I had one of our accountants pull our Acronis SnapDeploy invoice, I wasn't aware my company had purchased phone support, and it wasn't told to me until after I'd already left for the day last night.

I replaced the bootwiz.sys file as per the above instructions, reconfigured the PXE, and it still is resulting in the same error. I will contact phone support and hope that they can help walk me through a fix for this.

Thanks,

Jeremy

PS: When I have a solution, I will post it back here for all to see unless there was too many steps to remember! ;)

Is Acronis working on an official hotfix? This is getting pretty ridiculous. I've purchased a product I that I can't even use.

I followed the instructions I received from Yana for updating the PXE server, including replacing the bootwiz.sys file from this post.

Master Image Creator via PXE is working. It detects the NIC of the Dell Optiplex 380.
Snap Deploy Agent, however, is not working. I receive the kernel panic error described by Tony Finkbonner here.

I have tried the bootwiz.sys from all 3 archives that I downloaded. Results were the same for all of them.

In the meantime, the bootable media ISO downloaded from my account page has been working for me. This is not an ideal solution, though. Large rollouts are somewhat cumbersome without the PXE.

Edit: Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide to try and get this working.

Hi all!

Jeremy, thank you for your comment! Thank you for being ready to share a solution with us, it's highly appreciated! We will continue working on the issue here as well, and I hope you will visit our thread from time to time.

Mike, be sure we are really willing to fix all possible inconveniences and working hard to achieve this goal. I completely share your concern and would be glad if you could notify me about the current state of the issue you're experiencing, as I've never heard from you since my last PM sent to you.

Harmeet, thank you for your detailed comment!

Back to the case itself: I have some new details.

Yesterday evening I contacted our Development team and carefully checked the cases' base. We have reports regarding issues with Dell Optiplex 380 NIC recognition, but in most cases it is fixed by solution I suggested you. And there are only several cases where people have the same issue with kernel panic. This behavior is very strange, since Master Image is loading successfully, so it requires careful investigation. I'll try to explain how it works, maybe it will help to shed some light on the situation:

Kernel panic is received in case ramdisk.dat fails to unpack and load its modules into the memory. There 2 steps on which the glitch could have occurred:

  1. downloading ramdisk,
  2. loading it to the PXE,
  3. loading it to the PXE on booting, when it unpacks and uploads all necessary stuff.

As mentioned, this is a non-typical behavior since Master Image Creator is working, and we assume that the issue was caused by the glitch with unpacking ramdisk on booting from PXE (reason #3). Ramdisk.dat files of MIC and the Agent have different sizes:

27M     ./ramdisk.dat (Master Image Creator)
30M     ./ramdisk.dat.osd (Agent)

and somehow this 3 Mb difference appears to be critical. But we will find out why.

This can be related either to the PXE loader issue or with network issues and PXE settings.

In order to localise the problem, I would like to ask you to create Bootable Media CD with the Agent and try booting and deploy with its help. In case the download of Agent's ramdisk is fine this workaround will work as it did with Harmeet. This is the most probable scenario, and in this case we can recreate PXE server to be build on PXELinux Loader. Please, follow these instructions.

Thank you in advance for cooperation and patience.

Let me know if something seems confusing or still not working.

Thank you!
