Cannot restore image from USB hard drive using Standalone utility

Hello,

I appear to be having the same problem as the users in this thread:

I have been able to restore an image once in about 15 tries. When it did work it worked perfectly.

Can anyone offer some advice? I see there is a special standalone utility availble which I would like to try if possible.
