Issue with Acronis Snap Deploy + Universal Deploy deploying Windows 7 Volume License Build with KMS Activation

Thread needs solution

We are trying to use Acronis Snap Deploy and Universal Deploy to do our Windows 7 Deployment. We are using a KMS for Windows activation and have noticed a problem. We imaged 80 computers and our KMS would not go active. The KMS requires 25 computers to request activation before it will activate licenses. It turns out that all 80 of the computers we imaged have the same CMID which is what the KMS tracks the licensing by. According to Microsoft the only way to change the CMID is to run sysprep /generalize. We have never used sysprep with Acronis products and are wondering if anyone has found a way around this issue or if Acronis will be including support for this in the universal deploy product.

 Hello Vinnie!

Thank you for finding time to report about the issue on our Forum, I appreciate it! I understand your concern and will do my best to help you.

Unfortunately you're right, Acronis Snap Deploy 3 doesn't change CMID automatically. It can be done by sysprep, but Acronis Snap Deploy 3 has certain limitations when dealing with syspreped image: you can see all the information here, but in our case the most important part is that Acronis Snap Deploy 3 cannot apply Acronis Universal Deploy to syspreped machines.

There are 2 workarounds for this case:

  1. Run sysprep on every machine after the deployment
  2. In case you have a batch of machines that are identical (has identical hardware), then we can
    a) deploy the image onto one such machine with Acronis Universal Deploy
    b) Sysprep it and image it
    c) Deploy the syspreped image onto the rest of the machines

In both cases the issue should get resolved. I will also send the Enhancement request to our Development team for changing CMID, maybe this will be implemented in future releases of the product.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!
