Machine Name based on user input - way to automate?

The PCs here are named using an asset tag number issued by the inventory dept. I know I can change the individual settings in the Machine view but is there a way to append the name to the MAC address or stop the script so it prompts the Techs (who will be imaging the PCs)? Is the label that follows the MAC address the same as what the PC is going to be named?
