Scenario advice please

Thread needs solution

Hi from an old Ghost user,

I have a client who has just bought 40 Dell Optiplex 380 PC's with OEM Win 7 pro, they have bought MS Office 2010 Standard Open License, and have a specialist application for the shipping industry.

For obvious reasons I'd like to make one perfect machine, with Office installed, all Dell rubbish removed, and my specialist app installed. I'd like to then snapshot this machine and deploy it to the other 39 machines.

I'm assuming SnapDeploy is the way to go, but I have heard horror stories about OEM versions of Windows having to be re-installed because of licensing issues.

What procedure should I follow to do this successfully, or should I just sit down with a bunch of machines and get on with it.

Regards,

Mike

Hello Mike!

Welcome to our Forum, it's nice to have you among us! I completely understand your concern and will be glad to assist you.

I have carefully checked our internal resources and didn't find any known issue with Windows Activation after deployment. So we don't expect any issues with it. The worst thing that can happen: OS will ask for the License key on booting (in case there was no OS previously installed). All you need is just specify your Windows License and log into the machine.

For your scenario I'd advise you to use Acronis Snap Deploy 3 for PCs. With the help of it you will be able to create the image of one perfect machine and send it simultaneously to other machines. You can find all the information regarding its functionality in the Installation and User's Guides.

I would suggest you to test the solution first before making a final decision. This trial version is fullfunctional, and has no limitations except:

  1. 15 days of work
  2. Trial version can deploy only 5 machines

According to the Acronis License Policy you will need one license for one computer your are going to deploy the image (imaging doesn't require a license).

Please also note that you have a right for online immediate technical support with any questions during the trial period.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thanks for the reply - All of the machines are brand new and come pre-installed from Dell, so all will have an OEM version of windows installed at the factory with an OEM license key sticker on the box.
How will I take care of the change of machine name, SID etc? I'm assuming that I need to sysprep the machines before I start?

Hello Mike,

You are more than welcome, I enjoy assisting you.

Thank you for your question. I don't think there's any need in syspreping the machine. You can specify all the settings you need to get changed in the deployment template. You can find the full description of this function in the chapter 9, p. 52 in the User's Guide.

Let me know if something confuses you, I'll gladly explain!

Thank you!
