Snap Deploy new user questions

Thread needs solution

Acronis Snap Deploy with universal deploy looks like the perfect tool for my application. I have about 20 computers that have very specialized applications installed on them. I would like to be able to save an image of each of them so that when I have to replace a computer I can easily deplay the image back to the new computer no matter the difference in hardware. My questions are:

1. Do I only need a license for each machine I deploy to or do I need a license for each machine I save an image from? The way I understand it is I could have all the images ready to go & only buy the licenses as I need to deploy to new machines.
2. Do I need to have universal deploy license installed before I take the image in order for it to deploy to a disimilar hardward machine later? Is the universal deploy license tied to the MAC of the machine as it is being deployed as the Snap Deploy license is? I would just like a better understanding of the universal deploy license usage.
3. Because I have PC & Server machines, can I have Snap Deploy PC & Server management console installed on the same machine at the same time?

Please clear up these questions so I can be sure that this is the perfect tool for my application.

Hello Clif, welcome to the forum!

No worries, I will assist you and address the queries.

1. Do I only need a license for each machine I deploy to or do I need a license for each machine I save an image from? The way I understand it is I could have all the images ready to go & only buy the licenses as I need to deploy to new machines.

You need a license for each PC you deploy + license for each PC you create a master image from.

There are two cases when licenses are acquired from Acronis License Server:

  • Installation of Acronis Snap Deploy Management Agent
  • First deployment to a computer.

You can deploy any amount of images any number of times to one computer that has one license assigned to it. Once one license is assigned to one computer, it will not need new licenses for successful deployment.

License is assigned to MAC address of the corresponding NIC of a computer. Hence if the NIC is replaced in a computer, it will need a new license to work with Acronis Snap Deploy Management Agent or to perform deployment.

Please note that license is not required during the installation of Acronis OS Deploy Server, Acronis License Server and Acronis Management Console.

For the installation of Acronis OS Deploy Server it is required that Acronis License Server is present in network and have some licenses imported. However Acronis OS Deploy Server does not take any license by itself.

2. Do I need to have universal deploy license installed before I take the image in order for it to deploy to a dissimilar hardware machine later? Is the universal deploy license tied to the MAC of the machine as it is being deployed as the Snap Deploy license is? I would just like a better understanding of the universal deploy license usage.

No, Universal Deploy component is actually used during Deployment Template creation, so master image can be created without it. However, I would recommend you to install all available components together (OS Deploy Server + Universal Deploy).

Universal Deploy license assigns to MAC address as I described above.

3. Because I have PC & Server machines, can I have Snap Deploy PC & Server management console installed on the same machine at the same time?

Management console is a universal component, we do not divide the component for PC and server licenses - you can install one console on any PC you wish (or several PC's) and then use it to connect to PC's with server and workstation licenses.

I would recommend you to check the trial version for the Acronis Snap Deploy 3.0 in order to see how it works before purchase. With the trial version of Acronis Snap Deploy you will be able to deploy to 5 workstations or servers and use the product for a period of 15 days.

Also, please check the User's Guide for the product - you'll find a very useful information there.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Thank you.

Hi,
Sorry to bring up this topic again but I have a query that adds to the original questions.

If I have used a licence to restore a machine but the machine ultimately fails and needs completely replacing, am I able to claim the used licence back (put back in the licence pool) or will I need to buy a new licence?

Thanks
