Two Part Deployment Issue

Thread needs solution

I am pretty new to Acronis, so I will try to be as informative with this question as possible.

I have a HP DL360 G6 server that is running Acronis Snap Deployment 3, which has a configured version of of the program acting as my PXE server & a Xserve running OSX 10.5.8 as my DHCP server. Both servers are on the same subnet with no blocked ports on the firewall.

From a target PC, I am able to boot to my PXE server, hit the Acronis screen and go to the configuration page. The issue I am having that it appears that DHCP isn't being reached because next to DHCP, it says "not used" the address I am receive next to I{ is "169.254.124.59" with a subnet mask of "255.255.0.0."

I am assuming because I am running DHCP on a Xserve in conjunction with a PC server, this is the result. When I hit ok or manually type in an address, the process begins, hangs for a minute, cancels and boots back to the local HD.

So my question is if it is possible to use this deployment with the two, different types of servers?

========================

The second issues details with the size of my image. So, I have a base image of the Adobe suite, Microsoft suite, a rendering suite and an animation application. After I image the target machine, the image comes out to 50Gbs, which is very large. That is about ten times the size of a normal image. I also tried splitting the image apart, but it broke down to the same amount. Is there something I am doing wrong or is there a way for lower this size?

========================

I hope I was informative with my questions. Thank you.

Gerard

Hello Gerard,

Welcome to our forum. I would like to thank you for posting and I will do my best to assist you.

I see no problem in using this type of deployment on two different types of servers. Unfortunately due to lack of diagnostic information it is very difficult to say exactly why this issue occurs, but I can suggest a few workarounds that can help resolve this problem.

Please check this screenshot that I have made from the bootable agent. Can you please clarify, when you tick "Auto Configuration" does the DHCP server still show as unused? If you uncheck "Auto Configuration", you can provide all the network information manually. Please check page 45 of the User Guide for additional information.

To get around the problem with unexpected reboot. We can try two things:

1. Re-create the deployment template and in the network utilization settings, select unicast. Please use page 63 of the User Guide as a reference. Occasionally changing to unicast resolved reboot problems.

2. I will send you a private message with instructions for updating the PXE Server bootable components. This can fix the a potential hardware drivers issue that causes the reboot.

To decrease the size of the image I can suggest to toggle compression settings. This can be done during master image creation process, there is a separate option called Compression level. Please use page 48 of the User Guide for instructions.

If you need additional help or have any other questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hello,

Yes, I can confirm that that when I toggle the check box for "Auto configuration" DHCP still says "Not used." Here is the information I type in manually when the option is off:

IP - 192.168.100.250 (checked IP & it's free on my network)
Gateway - 192.168.100.1
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
DNS Suffix - We are not using Active Directory, so no need for this domain name, though I did add it in as a test without any luck.
Gateway - 10.75.5.50 & 10.75.5.51

As for the restart, I did changed the setting to "unicast" under network utilization settings. As

As for the size of the image, I will take a look at that via my deploy PC, which isn't next to me at the moment, but will do.

I hope I was informative.

Gerard

Hello,

I have updated all the config files that you sent, updated each folder based on your email & began reinstalling the agents. When it came to "Standalone Utility" though, I received an error message and couldn't install it. I have enclosed the error message to this email. So, when I PXE boot, I do see the other to agent options, but not the third one. Thank you.

Hello Gerard,

Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate the detailed response.

I have replied to your private message related to the PXE Server issue, we need additional investigation for it.

As for the DHCP issue, I am sorry for all the inconvenience, but these steps will help us to troubleshoot this problem even more.

When booting the remote machine to the PXE server, at the Acronis logo press the F11 key. A pop up will appear with the word: quiet

Remove the word quiet and press OK. You will then be taken to the # prompt. In the # prompt please type the following command:

asamba dhcp -n

This will get your DHCP IP address. The operation may take up to 30 seconds and if it fails the first time, try the same command one more time.

After this, to resolve this issue, we will need an Acronis Linux Report. Please use this article for additional instructions.

If the DHCP server loads after the asamba command, you can then use this command to boot back into the GUI and continue working with our software: /bin/product

This is a major inconvenience but at least this can serve as a temporary workaround. We will still need the Linux report to get this issue fixed.

If the DHCP server fails to load, then I am afraid we will have to wait for the analysis of the Linux report so that we can know exactly what the issue is.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
