Use Snap Deploy for less complicated tasks/backup/restore?
I have a small office with about 20 computers and a PDC. Windows 2008 R2 64 server and Windows 7 Pro 64.
Starting with 6 CAD stations (SolidWorks), I'd like to get to where I have a good, stable and up-to-date-on-patches configuration and make images to store on the network.
In my ultimate fantasies, there would be one recovery image and if one of the SolidWorks stations has an issue, I just restore my backup image to whichever workstation needs it.
In this fantasy, a user would be able to pull a USB flash drive from their desk and boot from it, which would, through menus or scripts, restore their machine to the saved image stored on the network.
Some snags: each machine has a different name, license, and each SolidWorks license is different on each machine. I'm content then with having an image for each of the 6 CAD stations. In talking to Acronis pre-sales, they suggested Snap Deploy, even though I wouldn't be doing Master Image deployments, it would do what I need and not cost a ton. In testing though, it seems CLOSE but not quite, and I wonder if I'm just over-complicating things.
To end up where I want, What applications will I need, and where? e.g.
License server on the network somewhere
Agents on the Workstation
Management Console, from whereever I want to manage from
Boot flash drive created from ? with which Features on it?
I used the Management Console to make a flash drive boot disk - I was able to put a tool for making a master image and a tool to deploy.
I booted from that flash drive and made a master image on the network of a CAD station.
When I tried to test restoring from this image, I was asked to enter all the things you would enter in a deployment to multiple stations from a single image.
I don't really want that, I want a real simple, backup image of each station, and a way to just restore that image - much like I would do with my personal usage of TrueImage Home.
Deploy is made up of so many little applications and so many ways to deploy each, I don't think, at this point I need all that. I would like to be able to move to more of a centralized method for dealing with this, and we will grow to need Snap Deploy and Server Advanced and some other things, but for now, will Snap Deploy do what I'm trying to do right now?
Snap Deploy seems VERY close, I don't even need the agent and so on, seems like the one flash drive I have will work great - take it to each station, make an image of each with names like CAD01.tib and CAD02.tib and then later, if a problem comes up, use that flash drive to restore the appropriate image to the right wkstn, but all those option for deployment are making it hard to know if it will be a real restored image, or some "deployed-restore". I want an exact image to be restored. If I can use Snap Deploy to do that all remotely, that would be great too.
As a follow-up to this, how to deal with updates? - just have to make new images periodically?, or is there some other "magic" Acronis has - normally I wouldn't ask this, but seems like Acronis sometimes does things I didn't think would ever show up in these apps, like restoring to dis-similar hardware and so on.
Many thanks, and apologies for that long message there.
