XP fails to boot after image deployment

Thread needs solution

Hi,
I have 2 identical Acer Veriton mini PCs. I did a fresh install of Windows on one, installed the programs I wanted, then ran sysprep. I then booted off of the Acronis media cd I created and created the master image to another hard drive I have attached via a usb connection. On the second PC I booted from the media again, used the stand alone launcher and restored the image. It appears to restore successfully, but in the several times I've done this I always get some error that prevents windows from booting. It will either give me a blue screen, flash an error quickly and then sit at an empty blue screen, or load the Windows XP logo for a second and then reboot, and continue that cycle. I've also changed the bios setting for the hard drive from AHCI to IDE, as I had to do that to install XP on the master image and it seems to make it less finicky. Swapping these back and forth didn't fix the problem either.

Am I missing something? Doing something wrong? I was hoping this would make my job easier since I have to deploy 10+ of these. The snap deploy management console I'm using is build 3329 if that helps. Thanks for any assistance, I don't want to give up on this quite yet.

Hello Shawn!

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here! I entirely understand how inconvenient the situation is, and will be glad to help you.

There can be several reasons for this issue. Unfortunately due to the lack of the diagnostic information it's hard to say for sure what went wrong, so this situation requires investigation.

But before we proceed with gathering the information, please re-deploy the image with disabling the option of SID change just to verify that there's no conflict (sysprep changes SID itself). In case the issue remains, please gather the following data:

  1. Acronis Info from the source machine
  2. BSOD message.
In order to find it, please reboot the machine, on the very start-up press F8, disable "Automatic restart on System Failure", and proceed with booting.
It will prevent machine from restaring, so you will get straight to the blue screen where the error will be seen.

This data will show us what exactly's happening on the machine when it fails to boot.

After that please kindly contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Dear Shawn,

Thank you for your comment and for sharing your concern with me.

It's actually not critical, so it's up to you to decide. We would also appreciate if you could specify what sysprep options you are using so that we could have a clear understanding of the system state.

Thank you!

I've tried it just using basic sysprep and also with the mini option. For some reason the master image won't accept any XP keys now so I'm remaking it.

I created a new image. Now I've narrowed it down to one error:
autochk not found - skipping autochk
then it reboots and repeats.
