Acronis 19.0.6571 Needs to be Terminated Upon Shutdown or Reboot

Thread needs solution

Today, when I started Acronis to check upon a failed backup on my PC running Windows 8.1, there was a pop-up message about an update. I permitted the update that failed twice, but eventually succeeded. The new update is  v. 19.0.6571.

When I rebooted the PC there was a message that Acronis had to be terminated before the PC could be shutdown in about 2 minutes. This error message was supposed to have been fixed in the previous update. I'm very annoyed about this. I now have to go into Services.msc and shut down Acronis each and every time I need to either rebooot or shutdown my PC.

I'm now having to consider looking for alternate backup software

Miriam, the message will still appear if a backup has started - do you have backups set to run after startup is a schedule is missed, using nonstop backup, or cloud backups that may take awhile.   The previous issue was receiving this message when no backups were actually running and I have not seen it come back since it was fixed in v6559 and later.

I have my backups scheduled to run in the middle of the night, when I'm supposed to be sleepingm staggered at 2 am, 3 am, 5 am on various days. I have weekly backups for my Solid State Drive.

I have daily backups for My Pictures, as I'm a Photography student using Lightroom 5.71 and Photoshop CS6 and need to make sure everthing is backed up to 3 different External Hard Drives. I also do a weekly backup on one my Samsung External Hard Drive which also holds daily backups.(Samsung).

There was a backup of My Pictures that had failed on my Western Digitall My Book External Hard Drive, that was supposed to run daily at 3 am on my Western Digital External Drive We'd gone away for a couple of days for a funeral, and I'd disconnected my External Drives. When I came back that drive was the only when I hadn't reconnected. I was using my PC in the middle of the day when no backups were scheduled, and for some reason, I had to reboot the PC, so that's when I got the "Operations in Progress" error message, and the PC did reboot after about 2 minutes.

I did run the backup manually this afternoon, so I haven't checked if I get the error meessage. I will let you know if I get the message again as no backups are scheduled today until 2 am (daily backup) and at 4 am (weekly backup) on my Samsung External Hard Drive.

Please note that I went to check if the manual backup of My Pictures on the Western Digital External Hard Drive had completed successfully. That backup was a daily backup. I always have the backup validated after completion. It had completed sucesssfully and had been validated.

I also noticed that the weekly backup on my Samsung External Hard Drive was set for 2 am on Saturday. The daily backup was set for 2 am. I changed the weekly backup time to 4 am so there would be no conflicts.

I keep My Documents and My Pictures separately on a SATA internal hard drive. The C:\ Drive is a Solid State Drive.

Since all the scheduled backups for the C:\ Drive and My Pictures had successfully completed, I then tried to shutdown the PC. Bingo! I successfully shut it down, then turned the PC back on, so that I could reply to your post.

I'd downloaded the latest Acronis update 19.0.6571 after they supposedly fixed the error message upon shutting down or in rebooting in the previous update And I still got the error.

In the meantime, I found the source of the Acronis Reboot/Shutdown error.

In the Acronis Schedule Settings under Advanced Settings there is a checkbox that is unchecked by default.

If one checks the box, backups will only be run when a device is attached. In this case, an external hard drive. With the box checked, if one disconnects an external hard drive and either reboots or shuts down the PC there is no Acronis error about terminating operations and that PC should be shut down in 2 minutes. That box should've been checked by default. It is commonsense that a backup can't be run with a device (external drive) disconnected. Acronis software engineers should have been smart about this and fixed the bug. One shouldn't have to remember to check a certain checkbox in the settings!

No one in Acronis helped me with this. I figured it out on my own.

Miriam, I have dealt with other users and recommended using this option to only run the backup when the current device is attached but for various reasons they did not want to use this as it would immediately trigger the backup to be run which in turn could impact on system performance etc.

So, whilst I understand why you might want this to be selected / enabled by default, other users would object to such a default setting!

I am not running non-stop or cloud backups. I do daily and weekly backups of my photos which I edit almost daily in Lightroom 5.71, Photoshop CS6, and use Plugins - On1 Photo 10, NIK, and Topaz to add pizzazz to my photos. Since I shoot my images bracketed, I end up with 3 shot at different exposures. So when I start editing in Lightroom, I might delete an image that is too dark or too light. I want that reflected in a daily backup of the photos. I use 2 different external drives to backup my photos.

I alo do weekly backups of the C:\ drive which hosts my applications and the D:\ drive which holds all my data -- Documents, Photos, Videos, Music. I do that on a different external hard drive.

Since I updated Acronis to v. 19.0.6571, and I checked the box in  Acronis' Schedule Tab's Advanced Settings to run backups only when the device is attached, I don't get the Acronis error message that "Operations are in Progress...." message when I reboot or shutdown my PC. My backups are schedule to run in the middle of the night when I'm sleeping on different days ranging from 2 am to 5 am.

I turn off my PC and its peripherals when we go to visit our children & grandchildren or go on vacation. Why? Florida is the lightning capital of the world. There are too many lightning strikes and power surges. sometimes the power goes out for a few seconds and it even isn't raining. Or it might be raining, but without a thunderstorm and the power goes out for a few minutes. Our electrical box is surge protected. Our electric meter is surge protected. Most of my equipment is connected to an APC UPS, but a photo scanner, an all-in-one printer and a color laserjet printer are not connected to it because they're on the other side of the room, but they are connected to a surge protected power strip.

Still, when we go away, I make sure everything is off, disconnectging the power cords from the external hard drives in addition to disconnecting the USB cords. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Fully understand your precautions against power surges, lightening strikes etc.  I lost a PC many years ago to such a thing and have used surge protection plus UPS devices ever since and haven't lost anything else!  I don't go as far as you with disconnecting power cords etc but then I am on the other side of the world in southern England and don't suffer the same issues as Florida.

Per your quote above, please do not use the same backup task when using your different external drives - this will cause unpredictable problems as each drive has a unique drive identifier (UUID) that is recorded for the task in the database, and swapping drives can cause database corruption, even if you use the same drive letter assignment.  The ATI Home product does not provide for this use of multiple disk drives for the destination of backups and the recommendation is always to create a separate backup task for each target drive being used.

Miriam, thank you for sharing your user experience and your feedback. I am glad to know that now you can safely turn off your computer when needed, without worring about possible 2-minutes shutdown delay caused by Acronis processes.

I believe you are aware that enabled checkbox "Run when the current destination device is attached" will make your missed backup tasks run automatically as soon as you connect your external drive and it is recognized by operating system, without asking your confirmation. As Steve said, some users want to run backups only within certain time frames and any "unexpected" backup start out of defined hours is not desired. That is why the checkbox comes unmarked by default.

Slava
