Acronis 2016 Upgrade Issues

Thread needs solution

A few days ago I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on a Dell XPS 1502X laptop. My Acronis 2013 would run, but gave me a warning that it was 'incompatible'. So I just did the online upgrade to 2016 (standalone PC version). Keep in mind here that I "know" Acronis through the 2013 interface. But I think something is missing or possibly an activation step didn't get done.

The primary symptom is that I can identify a "Disk and Partition" source and a custom destination (empty folder in a USB attached harddrive). And I can start a backup by clicking on the icon in the upper/left corner of the screen, then the "+" at the bottom, I set the 'Do Not Schedule' option, and hit "Back Up Now".

The only thing that changes is a message that says "Retreiving Information". I am assuming that a couple hours is long enough to wait, as the backup is not starting (my destination folder is still empty).

A number of things seem 'odd' to me. I will start with the basic installation outcome. The installation removed my old TI 2013 icon, but did not give me a new one. Hardly a unsolveable problem, but that seemed odd to me. So when I go to "All Apps" in the new START button in Win10, the Acronis entry gives me the choices of Acronis System Report, Acronis Website, Activate Acronis Start Up recovery Management, Add New Disk, Bootable Media, CLone Disk, Driver Cleaner, Manage Acronis Secure Zone, System Clean. None of these directly reference the primary purposes of the software which is to Back UP and or Restore files or disks. This seems odd to me.

When I choose one of these options I get an interface to create a new account or click 'Sign In', but it goes away and Acronis starts up after a few seconds. Again, this seems very odd to me.

BTW, I have done all this off a clean boot of Win10. Where should I go from here?

Thanks.

I would recommend that you unistall the application completely from the PC.  You can do so following the instructions found in this link:

https://kb.acronis.com/content/48668

In my experience it is not necessary to make the Windows Registry mods but I do check to make sure it is not needed.

After you uninstall go to your Acronis account on the Support site, log in, and access your products and downloads.  Locate the 2016 program download and download it.  Once downloaded you can right click on the file and choose run as admin.

While you are on your account page it would be prudent to access your serials for the 2016 product so that registration will not be a problem for you as well.

Trying to upgrade the True Image 2016 to latest build and keep getting the failed error due to "access denied". I looked at the temp folder and did find the log referred to on the Acronis website. Found the message about error 1603. I then downloaded the zip file recommended to try and solve this.

When I open this zip file Windows stops its use (at least warns me to stop) of one of the compressed file components. I believe it was an unsigned MSI file.

Anyone seeing this? I am on Windows 10 machine. My security scan of the zip found no problems but this stuff spooks me! :(

Thanks

Enchantech, thank you for the quick response. I followed those steps, and this time I got a registration/activation interface that I didn't see before. From what I can tell my backup is now proceeding normally.

William Ross,

Not sure what you are refering to in reference to " Found the message about error 1603. I then downloaded the zip file recommended to try and solve this."

It is common for for fixit files to not be digitally signed due to the time involved in accomplishing this signing.  So you would be safe to acknowledge the warning and proceed to run the file.

Having said that most of time the "access denied" error message is caused by third party anti-virus applications blocking the installer file of the product during installation.  To get around that issue you should disable your anti-virus app temporarily while you install the app then turn anti-virus back on after the install completes.

David ,

Glad to hear you are back on track, thanks for posting back.

My earlier question about access denied error on attempting to update my True Image 2016 to latest build referred to the following on the Acronis website:

  1. Open the installation log (see this article, if you need help finding the installation log).
  2. Search for this message:
MsiFileTrackerInstall64_file_tracker_api__I returned actual error code 1603
  3. If you see this error message in the log, download file_tracker_setup_2501.zip, unpack, and run it. After the component is installed, reattempt the installation of build 6571.
If you don't see this error, check other solutions below.

Note the error message referred to in item2. I found it and have downloaded the zip file per above but I get a warning from Windows 10 system that the MSI file (part of the zip) might cause damage to system and is unidentified / unsigned so do so at my own risk (not exact words but essential meaning). Just wanting to make sure this is a legitimate / safe program that is coming from Acronis.

Thanks for your reply and advise.

William, the file_tracker_setup_2501.msi installer file is signed by Acronis Internation as described in KB document: 58249: Acronis True Image 2016: Update to Build 6571 Fails with "Access is denied"

I have downloaded and installed this on my own Windows 10 system and received no warning messages about it being unsafe, so this may be a 'false positive' warning from your security software.

I agree with Steve here on the warning being a false positive of your security software.  I concur with his findings as well.

I took your advise and ran the .MSI file that the windows system was warning me to beware of. All ran properly and the new build installed correctly. I ran a quick virus scan following the whole operation and all is well with it as well.

I very much appreciate all of the help.

Guess these security issues are getting so complex it is hard to tell the good programs from the bad sometimes.

William,

Because Acronis operates at the extreme low level of a hard disk meaning unrestricted full access, Security Software will flag that as a potential threat and rightfully so.  It is up to the user to determine if the action initiated is safe or not.  You did the right thing by checking up on what you saw and what occurred.  Other users are well advised to follow your example if they are unsure of what the outcome might be or what a warning might mean.

Glad to hear that your issue is resolved and thanks for reporting back.
