Acronis can't open .TIB file

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Last week I installed Acronis Backup for VMWare (v9) as vm appliance, I made backups of all my VM's.

Yesterday 2 SSD's crashed with all the VM's on it inclusive Acronis appliance.

Vmware won't boot anymore and I don't have access to my vm's.

I Installed the trial of Acronis True Image 2016 on a phycical pc.

How to mount the .TIB file and unpack it?

True Image gives a error when mounting:

Failed to open backup e:\FreeBSD-Fileserver.TIB. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.

The error is with all of the .TIB files.

How to get the data back?

Any help would be appreciated, I'm clueless at the moment.

Best Regards,

Donald.

Donald,

Here's a link for a TIB mounter patch.

I am not sure if this will work with the trial version.

Donald, I would recommend opening a new post for this problem in the specific Acronis Backup for VMware product where there should be people who know this product far better and can advise whether the backup image files are actually compatible with the ATIH 2016 product given they were created by a business product.

With the trial, recovery can only be done with the offline bootable recovery media (at least in Acronis 2016 - not sure about the vm product though as I haven't used it).  https://kb.acronis.com/limitoftrial

Are your backup on a NAS?  If so, if you're in a pickle and have a drive to test.  I would copy the backup from the NAS to a USB external drive and see if you still get the same issue or not.  It may just be that the restore from the network is having authentication issues that you'd have to figure out locally, but the backup themselves are actually not bad at all.

With an active trial, you should also have access to technical support during the trial period.

It seems the .TIB files between acronis products are not compatible with each other. (why???)
I installed the Acronis Backup for VMWare Appliance v9 to another ESXi Host, copied the previous local .vmdk disk to that appliance.
Mounted it in Acronis Appliance and restored it to a temporary datastore, on it is my FreeBSD Server which is using a big storage of 24 harddrives (ZFS) where the other TIB VM's are located.
It seems that Acronis cannot do a full 1:1 backup, the bootloader and GPT tables were corrupted.
I had to mount a bootable FreeBSD ISO image to the VM and booted it, issued these commands to get gpt table and bootloader fixed:

gpart recover ad0
gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 ad0

I can boot the VM now and have access to my data, now restoring the other TIB's.

Maybe it can help someone else in the future running into these same problems.
Thanks for all your support.

Still deciding if I will buy the full product as I'm running into these strange situations...

Donald, I'm not sure.  So far, I've had luck restoring backups made with different products (ATIH 2016, SD5 and Backup 11.7). I'm not sure about VMWare applicance though as I've never used it.  Unfortunately, although I've had luck (and I'm sure others have as well), the compatibility lists only show that backups made with like products are actually supported.  That said, the backups I've made with offline bootable media (regardless of the app created with), so far have been recoverable in a bootable state with the other products.  I think the key for my success though, is that the backups were all taken "offline".

If you're using a trial at the moment, I would open a support case and see if they can help better explain the reasoning why backups are not always compatible across different Acronis products.  I'm guessing that some of this may be by design as some of the Enterprise products have different options than the home ones and each product has a different level of ability for both backup and recovery.
