Acronis stopped backing up to external disk

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis True Image 2016 for about 6 months. Backups going fine. Now everytime it tries to backup I get an error message saying the backup location was not found on the destination drive. I have checked the drive - there are files there until 8/15/16. That is the last one. I have tried the retry and the skip to an earlier file but it does not work. What do I do now? Thanks for the help.

David, welcome to these user forums.

The most common cause of this type of problem is where Windows has allocated a different drive letter to your backup drive.  This can occur simply because you plugged in a USB memory stick while the drive was powered off or disconnected, where the USB stick then was give the letter previously used by the drive, and when you reconnect the drive it gets the next available drive letter.

Check your settings in ATIH 2016 for the Destination drive then check in Windows Explorer what letter the drive is using to see if these match?

I had the same problem after the Win10 Anniversary update. The drive letters and the folders were correct but I still kept getting an error. I finally fixed this by re-pointing Acronis to the same location.

Yes, this seems to be common with Windows 10 "updates".  Essentially, Windows 10 is doing a full install over the old OS and copying settings, profiles and applications back over.  Part of the install process is that it always creates the recovery partition again, hence, changing the disk information that Acronis is looking for.  As a result, it may no longer appear to Acronis as the disk that was originally used for the backup task.  Like Nils, I have found that simply picking the source and/or destination in the backup task again, will resolve this (unless the drive letter keeps changing, in which case, like Steve mentioned above, setting that to a later letter in the alphabet can alleviate Windows behavior of reassigning a drive letter).

Thanks for the help. I was able to reset everything and get Acronis to see the files on the external drive again. I'll watch for this problem when Windows does a major update.
