Acronis TI 2016 system continues running after backup on shutdown (win10)

Thread needs solution

Hi,

This is a brand new install of Acronis True Image 2016.

I am trying to evaluate whether it is worth 60£.

I tried backing my C drive on shut down last night with validation option at creation checked, max compression.

My system is win 10 based. C drive is samsung 830 ssd.

Destination is synology Nas. Network is 1Gb and tranfers measured at 950Mb.

This is the first backup so it is a full system image. Then it will be incrementals every day at shutdown. System takes about 78GB.

The backup starts properly on shut down and it says that it has to terminate some processess and will shut down in 2 minutes (which is a lie as it is a full backup with validation over network - could do with a real ETA).

I let is stay at that overnight for 12 hrs non stop.

The system never shut down.

Acronis does not see the backup as complete and validated after I forced a reboot.

On my synology Nas though there is a proper c drive image (compressed to 38GB). I have not tried to validate it though.

When I tried to recheck it it run into the same issue and created a second full system backup (as it does not see the first one in its metadata).

I am using the scheduler included in Acronis TI 2016. Option to backup at restart/shut down once a day.

Any clues what is wrong?

Thx for your time.

Tom

Tom, I've had the same problem.  Backups start but will not stop (even if you want them to).  Technical support's solution is to use Windows Task Manager to end the Acronis Task.  I've even run the Acronis Repair Routine with no luck.  I've even uninstalled and reinstalled the software with success but lost most of my backup names on the main dashboard.  I think Acronis is aware of the issue and will probably fix it with later releases.  In the meantime we better be glad they don't manufacture automobiles!!!  Sorry I can't give you a better solution.  If you find one from someone else, please post it.  Oh, I'm also running Win 10.  Acronis 2016 may have minor incompatibilities with Win 10? Or Win 10 could be unstable?  I have issues with my Win 10 upgrade from Win 8.1 that has nothing to do with Acronis.

I believe there are issues with True Image and Windows startup/shutdown features.  These issues have been reported in this Forum by other users.  The workaround for now is to use Windows Task scheduler to run the desired backup at the desired time.

I encourage any user experiencing such issues or any others for that matter to take advantage of the Feedback feature built in to the product which you can find under the Help feature to report all isues with the product.

You can use a post processing command to perform the shutdown. See https://forum.acronis.com/forum/38609 from Grover's Guides. I have been using this approach for several years and have rarely had any issues.

The thing is I am most interested in the feature which allows this software to trigger backup on shut down and then switch computer off.

with the additional commands I can cause a ahut down after backup but what will trigger the backup itself?

If you use the post processing command approoach you would have to schedule your backup at a time convenient for you. I backup our desktop each night at 2:00AM. The post processing command shuts the machine down after the backup completes. I follow a similar approach for my laptop.

thomasjk is correct.  Use the scheduling feature in ATIH 2016 to have it automatically kick off the backup at the desired time.  You can then set the scheduled task to shutdown the computer once the backup job has been completed.  Keep in mind that validation basically doubles the job time as it has to compare everything it just backed up so make sure you give it enough time to complete.  I'd also recommend that you don't take the default .TIB backup size as it couild be a single large file which is not ideal for performance.  I suggest setting a specific .TIB size that you're comfortable with, but I'd recommend keeping each .TIB 5GB or less (especially if you think you'll ever need to transfer them to a FAT32 drive which has a 4GB file limitation of any one file).

Guys we dont seem to be on the same page as to what I am trying to achieve.

I want this software to do a backup on system shut down.

Not at specific time as it is impossible to predict on anyday and I dont want it to run in the background when the pc is in use.

I assume now that it is impossible to achieve and will have to simply manually trigger backup at the end of each day.

Yeah, sorry, it the current shutdown process is not working, I'm out of ideas.

However, if you plan to shutdown and backup at the end of the day, alternatively, create your backup and select the "computer shutdown" option in acronis.  Granted, you'll still have to launch acronis manually to kick off the backup first, but once you have, it will backup and then proceed to shutdown on it's own. Not exactly what you were asking for, but is a work-a-round of sorts that accomplishes pretty much the same thing.  Instead of you pressing shutdown and the backup then running, you prestt the backup button and then the shutdown will occur after that - either way, there's a small amount of user interaction and the rest is automated.

You might try disabling Windows 10 Fast Startup, then reboot your machine for the change to take effect.  Run the task with the upon shutdown selected and post back your results.
