Acronis True Image 2016 changes my source and destination choices
I am trying to recover the data drive (no OS) belonging to my old computer from a backup folder (incremental backup) on a USB drive connected to the new computer. There is an empty HDD waiting to receive it. I cannot select the correct source and the correct destination at the same time. Either TI is trying to copy the whole USB drive onto the new drive or it's going to copy the correct backup onto the USB drive. Then it warns me it's a bad idea to be recovering onto the same drive. Then it stops working.
There doesn't seem to be a clear distinction between cloning and recovering from backup. I feel like there are parts of the process missing.
On last try, I managed to get the right hand panel looking as it should with the correct backup selected from the USB drive on the left and the correct new disk on the right. I then clicked to recover and the next thing it showed me was the C: drive and Users from my old computer that it could only have gotten from an entirely different backup.I think it's seeing a new drive and wants to be Smart and put an operating system on it. Maybe it doesn't see my new OS on the SSD. I've tried to uninstall the program to reinstall and start over fresh, but it would only let me repair, which it said was successful.I've run out of ideas.
Old computer: Win XP Pro with 2 PATA drives, new computer Win 7 Pro 64-bit with SSD and SATA HDD

Before I attempted to recover the data, I did make a series of backups of the whole new PC and put them on the same USB drive. I also mounted a different version of the old PC data drive backups to check the size of existing partitions. Then I made what might be a good Acronis boot disk, but I was thoroughly confused by how long it took to make and screens that made me think it was trying to copy the whole USB drive, like 681G.

Enchantech: Thank you for your excellent advice. I had been resisting using the DVD because of the weird things I saw while it was being made and I expected more interface problems. The disc worked perfectly. I did have to figure out how to set the BIOS to boot from the DVD and that was also nothing like my old BIOS. Then, when the data was written,I couldn't get back into Windows, either from the disk or by booting without the DVD in the drive. So I had to reset the BIOS to where it was. Now, I have to find a user's guide for the motherboard. Problem I'm left with is what is wrong with the desktop interface to TI 2016? And can I trust it to make the backups correctly?

I think you can. If you have odd looks to the GUI or items missing from the interface like an expected icon or command button you can attempt to repair the installation by using Windows Add/Remove Programs. Locate Acronis True Image in the list, select and choose Uninstall. You will get a menu from which you can run the repair option. If that fails then I would suggest uninstall and then re-install the application.

I did try to uninstall, thinking I would then reinstall. That led me to discover the Repair option. It said it was successful, but it didn't fix anything. It wouldn't uninstall, just sat there endlessly until I shut down the PC. I guess the next thing I will try to do is make a backup of the new disk I just created. I think I should make it a policy not to have backups for both drives on the same USB disk. TI seems to have a strong affinity for backups containing an OS. Thanks again.
