After cloning disk, USB devices not working

Thread needs solution

Hi all,
I have an HP computer (p/n: VN791ET) with Windows 7 working well.

I've cloned the original disk (Samsung SSD 840 Evo 120 GB) to a new disk (Samsung SSD 750 Evo 120 GB), because I want to preserve the original disk.

After installing the new SSD, Windows boots and all seems working, except all USB devices. I get the error "this device cannot start. (code 10)".

I've tried several alternatives, but no one is working, the only solution seems to be reinstalling Windows.

The strange thing I don't understand is why and how a new cloned disk can introduce this problem.

Anyone can help me?

Thanks

DM, welcome to these user forums.

I seem to recollect another user reporting something very similar a little while back in the forums but don't remember the outcome of that post.

It does seem very strange as by definition a clone is an identical copy of one disk drive to another disk drive, which should mean that all device drivers that were on the original drive and present on the cloned drive.

Please ensure that you do not have both the original and cloned drive both installed and active in your system, that is known to cause some issues and may be what caused problems for the other user I recollect?

Hi Steve,
I'm sure, there is only the new disk installed.

I've cloned disks with Acronis products for many years, but with Windows 2000/XP it was working well.
In the last few years I had this problem a few times... for sure with a Lenovo PC but I don't remember the exact model. It's indeed a strange behavior, because with other computers there's no problem.

The same thing happens if I try to take a backup image and then restore it.

DM, is the cloned drive connected to the same SATA port / cable as the original source drive you cloned from.

I tried searching for the other post in the forums but unfortunately cannot find it again and the new forum search has taken away the ability to sort the search results by date too!

Steve, the cloned disk is connected to the same SATA port and cable of the original one.

At this point I think the only thing I can to solve the problem is to buy Acronis Support and investigate...

DM, I found the following thread in the Seven Forums which looks to be the same issue as you are seeing:  Windows 7: Usb drive not working after Samsung SSD 850 cloned where the cause of the issue was deemed to be the Samsung Magician software installed on the source drive - uninstall this then retry the clone or try the same on the cloned drive and see if USB devices work again?

Hi Steve, you're right... this is exactly my problem and my solution.

I simpy uninstalled Samsung Magician from cloned disk, rebooted and USB was working. Then I reinstalled Samsung Magician and USB works like a charm!

Thank you very much, you save me a lot of time.

DM, glad to have helped you - I knew I had seen something like this before but was straining the little grey cells trying to remember what, where, when etc.  Good job we have search tools like Google!
