Again Problems with ATI2016

Thread needs solution

Hello,

This morning I found an email in my mailbox which informed me about a problem with the last backup. Here is the according log file:

Chrystal Disk Info doesn't report any SSD/HDD problems. So, what's wrong?

Additionally, there is a second though (yet) minor problem - a picture is worth a thousand words (see attachment). Why haven't the old files been deleted?

Many thanks for help in advance.

The log messages are essentially saying that you do not have sufficient space on your backup drive for the new backup being created:  Die Quoten sind übertreten.  Quotas exceeded is normally shown when there is insufficient space.

Hello,

Thank you very much for helping again. I must admit that I can't imagine your interpretation of the log messages applies in my case: there should be enough space for storing the (incremental!) backup - see attachment.

Wondering

Looking at your initial screen image, your next backup should be a Full one, not incremental.

Create a new backup version after 7 incremental is shown in your settings.

You have _b4_s1 to s8 (1 Full and 7 Incremental) files shown, so the next should be _full_b5_s1.

The b4 Full was around 460GB size and your drive shows 632GB free space, so there is the possibility that the next full is either larger than the b4 one, or else your free space is fragmented and you do not have enough contiguous free space.

That absolutely right! But why shouldn't have been enough space for the last incremental backup which has been stored last night?

There are definitely no additional data files so that 632 GB should be enough space for the next full backup. I'll start defragmentation for the backup HDD immediately.

On the other hand there would be a lot of additional free space on that drive if the former backups would have been deleted as scheduled ...

There was no need for defragmentation - see attachment.

One other place to check:  In your backup task, open the Notifications page tab and check if you have Show notification message on insufficient free disk space enabled and what value is set for this?

See KB 30771: Acronis True Image Home 2012: "Die Quoten werden verletzt" where a similar problem was documented in that earlier version of ATI due to disk space issues.

Finally, do a CHKDSK /F for your backup drive in case there are any filesystem issues causing free space to be incorrectly mapped.

I have - see attachment 36.

Thanks, I'll read that.

No problems - see attachment 35.

BTW: What about the files which already should have been deleted?

The b4 Full was around 460GB size and your drive shows 632GB free space but with a warning notification level set at 300GB, this means that the quotas message is saying that your 460GB backup will not fit in only 332GB space as set by this free space warning setting (632-300GB).

Your settings mean that your oldest backup version will not be deleted until 9 days after the next new Full backup file for a new version chain has been successfully created, which from the above information will be 9 days after 09.09.2018, so not before 18.09.2018.

Unfortunately, I can't follow your analysis. Didn't the quotas message relate to the last update? Even if it were a pre-announcement concerning the full backup to be created tonight, I couldn't understand it: after all, still 630 GB of disk space are free at the moment! If it were less than 300 GB now then it would be ok - but not under the given circumstances! I'd exspect such a message after the full backup to come.

Then there is another question: According to the backup schedule a full backup is to be written after seven incremental versions. If I understand the log file correctly ATI tried to write a full backup although since the last full backup only 6 incremental images were stored. Am I right?

Thanks and best regards

The quotas message related directly to the attempt to create the new _full_b5_s1_  backup file which your screen shots of the files on your backup drive does not show as being present, so this file was not created because there would not be sufficient free space available after allowing for your requirement to have 300GB remaining out of the available 632GB space.

Sorry, not right!  Your screen image shows files s1 to s8, which is 1 x Full and 7 x Incrementals, so the next file will be a new Full for the b5 chain, hence the error for that file due to quotas exceeded.

OMG! What an embarrassing error. I think I have to repeat to learn how to count ...

Many thanks for your patience.
