ATI 2016 Quick Question

Thread needs solution

HI,

I have my recently purchased Acronis TI 2016 set up to do incremental backups at 4AM nightly and it's working perfectly for me. I do have a question though, every time I restart my Win10 Pro system during the day I get a message shutting down Acronis TI 2016, is it running all the time, just curious why?

Thanks,
Steve

You get a message from Acronis saying it is shutting down the computer, or a message that says Acronis is shutting down?

When I restart my computer (during the day), it says restarting then it says Acronis is shutting down wait 2 minutes. Acronis TI ran incremental image at 4AM, why does it need to be shutdown to restart the computer, shouldn't be idle when the incremental ends at 4:07AM?

Do you have shutdown computer after backup completes selected? Since this is an incremental backup I suspect 2 things which might be at issue here. One is if you have validation at time of backup option enabled and shutdown computer after backup completes, the validation step is not being recognized by the application or is being ignored and shutdown occurs prior to validation completion. Another is that incremental consolidation is running after the backup completes and is not finished when computer shutdowns.

The application then on machine restart not being able to shut itself down properly does so at that time.

I believe this to be a Bug so reporting this to Acronis would be appropriate. From my view point the best way to do that is using the in app feedback feature which you can find in the Help Section (open book icon) of the GUI.

Enchantech,

I don't have either of those 2 options checked in Acronis. I keep my computer up overnight, to do Acronis backup, then Virus/Malware scans. Sometimes during the day I do a restart if I need to for various reasons, windows update, other software products update etc. That is when I see the problem.

I'll take your advice and report it though feedback feature

I will say that incremental consolidation, depending on total data amount, can take a significant amount of time to complete. If an application process does not complete the application may try to complete that process without the user requesting that action.

Below is a link which lists True Image 2016 services and processes. You might use task manager to monitor these during the day and before a planned restart to find which may be running. This could lead you to what is causing the message.

OK, tomorrow after the backup and before I do a restart, I'll look at task manager to see what *If Any* of those processes are running.

Also look under the Acronis scheduler/advance options and confirm the option
"Run only when idle"
is unchecked.
You do not want this opiton checked.

OK,

Run only when idle was not checked. I looked at the Acronis tasks in task manager last night and again this morning after my backup finished here are the tasks running on my system, nothing changed from before and after the run http://screencast.com/t/tjDW8AmNNsl

Try to uninstall Acronis True Image. Unfortunately you have Window 10 so I cannot send you to use the cleanup utility at this time. Then reboot, and reinstall.
Start new backup tasks in empty directories and see if the problem subsists.

Hi Pat L,

Do you suspect something in my install is corrupted, I mean I have no problem going back through the install, how will my current backups be deleted?

Did you also have a look at the services in the list under the services tab of Task Manager? Any one of those running would trigger the message your seeing.

I do not see any activity for the 4 tasks of any sort, I ran an extra backup and it ended, watched the tasks for a long time zero activity for them. I guess in the scheme of things, this is not an earth shattering problem as Acronis is working perfectly so far for my entire PC backup, and the restart message is not hurting anything as far as I can see.

***I do have one other question, I set up an incremental backup schedule now with create 6 incrementals after a full and keep 3 chains (21 backups), when will the first cleanup begin, on the 4th chain full backup or the end of the 4th chain incremental, just curious?

Sorry, now that I'm thinking about it, my last question. IT was rather DUMB, the only way I can preserve 3 chains(21 images) is for the 4th chain to complete, so I have anywhere from 21 to 27 images to restore from, when number 28 runs, I'll again have 21 at that point. Sorry for my DUMB question...Thanks for a great program and support!!!

You chose 3 chains (21 files) as your retention quota. Upon the successful completion of the backup #22 (Full B4), your quota will have been exceeded, therefore, Automatic deletion of oldest chain ( 7 files of chain1) will occur immediately (seconds later) following the Full backup #22 (full b4).

After the deletion , what will remain is
7 Files of chain 2.
7 files of chain 3,
Full of b4.

Additional incremental will accrue and each subsequent deletion of the oldest chain will occur seconds after each FULL backup in the future.
In other words, deletion will occur when the number of backups exceeds 3 chains or 21 files or after each full backup in the future.

For best results, don't edit or change your configuration, other than a possible schedule change. If changes needed, stop using the old task and start a new task with the correct or desired settings.
