Automatic backups on non-admin account not working

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I use TI 2014 and TI 2016 and am after some advice running automatic backups on windows 2010.

I initially had my main user account as an admin account and all was working fine.

NAS boots -> Boots PC via WOL -> scheduled backups occur

I have now made my main account a standard account and have another unused account as admin. Both are local accounts not Microsoft accounts.

My PC boots into my normal account automoatically without password.

I have TI set to run as admin however when I go to run it it still demands the admin login credentials thus the backups aren't occuring.

I have just entered into the backups the "use alternate windows account" info for the admin login but wanteed to check if this will resolve my issues.

My backups are done by partition so I hope if this does work it will be backing up all user files etc as well and give a full backup like I had before (not one neutered by being from another account in some fashion).

Hope someone can advise the best way to proceed :)

Where did you set the "run as another user" (2014? - https://kb.acronis.com/content/1739)  - I dont' remember that option in 2016 and don't see it in 2017.  Since 2015, some of the features from 2014 and have been stripped down to try and make it more simple for home users, but at the cost of removing some of the functionality and granular settings that some of us took advantage of in 2014 and earlier versions.

In 2015 to current, when you create the backups, you should create them while logged in as an administrator.  Those backups should then run with schedule manager under that account automatically, even if logged in as a regular user account.

Most of the functionality of Acrons requires an admin account to do anything (like double clicking a .tib to view it, or mounting a .tib, or configuring backups, etc).

Another option you can do is to create the backup with your admin account.  Then set up a scheduled task to launch with the admin account under Windows scheduled tasks, calling on the backup .tis file in the scheduled task directly from Windows.  That should run, regardless of whoever is logged in, as long as the scheduled task has the correct admin account to launch it.

Grover's Guide () shows the basics.  However, the shortcut option is no longer available.  You have to find the specific backup .tis and enter it manually now.  You can open the .tis with notepad to see the name of the backup that corresponds with it.

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

It must be TI 2014 I am using then on this PC right now. I do have a TI 2016 licence but I had some issues with my NAS credentials for backups so went back to 2014.

I will see if it works wit hthe Admin user name and p/w now entered into the backup settings.

I cannot open TI without entering the admin credentials but I assume with this set the program wil be able to run the automatic backup tasks?

The installation of acronis occured under the current account which is no longer the admin account.

Hopfully all is working with your install.  You should always install software with an admin account - right click and "run as administrator" whether logged in with a regular account or an account with admin.  It's only that extra step of using the "run as administrator" that truly gives the installer full admin access.  If things do get funky, run the installer again, following that guidance and try to "repair" it.

THanks for the advice :).

At this time rather than go back to doing a full reinstall I simply ammended my account priveleges which corrected the problem.

I would eventually like to go to a setup using an admin account for initital installations and control and then a standard account for day to day use for the extra protection. It's causing to much of an issue with some items to do it on the fly now though.

I'll have to follow up with the capabilitis of TI 2016 /17  I guess. I kept TI2014 as it allows me to use specific login credentials on a per share basis for the NAS shares I backup to. THis means they are read only at any time other than when the backup is occuring (unfortunately that itself creats a login session so the share is accessible at that time). It's part of my protection routine for ransomware.

Cheers :)
